New axle

Complete body off restoration of 1953 flying cloud. Should I replace the original leaf springs and axle or go with a new dexter torsion axle?

It may be difficult to replace the existing springs. I went with two torsion axles and disc brakes on my 1954 Liner.

You will have to do some re-engineering to install the torsion axles.

Getting new leaves will be easier (no modifications) and should be less expensive as well. As it is a cheaper design.

What ever direction you take having a 60+ year old trailer back on the road will be cool.

Hi guys! Hey, I am about to order a new axle for my 1960 Overlander (single axle). My question is how much ground clearance (ground to the bottom of the frame) can I expect? I have some modifications to the plumbing hanging underneath my trailer and I don't want to leave a pile of black water in a driveway somewhere!

I used to have a spring axle, which I mounted below the springs to give me extra clearance. I am planning on getting a torsion axle from Colin Hyde, but so far he has not answered this question. Anyone out there willing to go out and get a measurement for me?0Do yo know what kind of angle you started out with?

It's been my experience in owning older, classic, boats or cars/motorcycles/guns... that keeping them original protects their value and appreciation,... while major alterations often reduces it, ...and can reduce it's design/engineering-integrity. I'd recommend you keep it original.
