Ahhhh so that's the reason she locked up is because the lower spring busted.

I haven't measured but these 62 globetrotters are a 12" setup correct? I'd like to get through inland but I'm in such a rush I might have to sorce local. With a full hub replacement she should spin

When I got my Bambi II the brakes had not been used in over 10 years. So of course they would not work when I plugged in. Axle was shot so I went ahead got a new axle complete with new hubs and brakes thru Colin. After the new axle was installed brakes would still not work. I took it down to Foley Airstream and they discovered that all the brake wiring had totally self destructed. They replaced the wiring and low and behold I had brakes. Nice feeling having reliable brakes and to once again be legal in my state.

One of two things happened, IMO. Either the brakes were so mis-adjusted on the loose side, that the adjuster came off the ear of the shoe and then the spring came loose and broke from rolling around, etc. Or, the spring broke and the shoes were so mis-adjusted (loose) that the adjuster fell out.

If you are not using the brakes just take everything off and put the drum back on. The brakes don't need to be there.

To get confirmation if anyone here has their measurements on an old single axle globetrotter (1962) what I've measured is:
22.5% arm angle
57.875" outside to outside mounting bracket
73.75 hub face dimension

That sound about right?
I think my original axle was 3200? Def need 3500 at least??

In 1962 some of the axles were welded to the frame, all were bolt on after that. You might need to have a frame bracket made up and welded on so you can bolt on a new axle.

Running without brakes - sure you CAN do it - but it's probably not legal, and if you have to have your trailer safety inspected annually, brakes and tire wear are about the two biggest things they check.

Even if you operate with NO brakes, you need to be aware of what can go wrong. ANY trailer CAN become separated from the tow vehicle. And with no brakes - this is exactly what happened right here in Va. Beach, to people I knew and loved:

The husband and wife were towing a utility trailer without brakes. They needed to stop at the local toll gate and when they braked their truck, the trailer bounced off of it's ball, the safety chains parted, and the trailer bounced along the road, with it's tongue going up and down hitting the roadway. The freak accident? The tongue hit and pierced a station wagon's gas tank two lanes away from them. The family of seven lost two members, and the rest were horribly burned. These very nice people were tied up in court for years, the trailer hitch manufacturer was sued, the station wagon manufacturer was sued, they were sued. The trauma of watching that family fry was worse than all the rest. I think they both died earlier because of that experience.

Several posters have suggested you consider new axles with new brakes and bearings. You seem want to avoid spending money, and seem to be happy that you can put stuff back together with NO brakes. I just pray that YOUR luck doesn't run out. Being cheap cost everyone who was sued almost $17 MILLION dollars.

There are a LOT of benefits to having a new axle on an old trailer. Knowing you've never killed someone through carelessness - priceless.

I'm not looking for a lesson. I tow food trailers every single day, 6 times a day. I'm well versed in towing.

Obviously I'm replacing my axle if you took the time to read the above post. Please don't jump to conclusions about my character there buddy.

Today my AS is back with it's new Dexter axle complete with new brakes, e-z lube fittings and new shocks from Airstream courtesy of P & S Trailer Service.....& 3- Tow Master ST225/75r/15 mounted & balanced Total cost $794.76!

I am just across the pond in Victoria, I just recently ordered my new axles from Inland RV for two of my Airstreams all Andy needed from me was the serial number off of them and he knew what I needed. It was a pretty simple replacement. you can get bare or complete axles...go for the complete and you will get all new drums,bearing, brakes and all that stuff and the shocks (sold separately) were something like 25 bucks each. If you know someone on the other side of the border you could get the new one shipped to you could possibly save a bunch of money on the cross border shipping and just pay duty and taxes at the border

Ya I talked to Andy this morning he's awesome.

It's just the exchange rate is a killer right now, added 20% plus taxes at the border you almost end up paying double.
I've ordered lots of stuff through inland but I might have to have this one built up here locally. If it wasn't for the exchange rate its obviously a no brainer.

Will this size axle fit?

22.5* down angle

3500 # axle

I bought this Dexter axle for my '61 Safari in 2008.
Took the trailer on one trip from Oregon to Minnesota and back
Then I rebuilt the interior and found my weight had gone up to 3575 # loaded
Took this axle off and installed a new heavier axle.

I also made new mounting plates with the additional brackets which take the outside to
outside measurement to about 57.87"

If this would work, then comes the big question --- how much of a hurry are you in?
I will be driving my pickup to Vancouver, BC in mid August and could deliver the axle easily. I am sure we can work around the exchange rate to a price we both like.

Pacific Spring and Axle is in Langley BC. I got my torsion axles from them made to spec.!

Sorry I came across as harsh. What really happened is I started posting, then got called away for an hours, and hit "send" without looking at the new stuff you had posted. Glad to see you've got your new axle coming. You will love the difference. I should remember that only about 1 in 10 streamers actually are members - and have a pretty sharp learning curve.

I see stuff in campgrounds that just makes me shake - and even experienced campers occasionally do strange things. A neighbor with a fifth wheel has a truck that has the side walls of his bed completely crushed - he didn't lock the trailer down correctly and it fell off the jack and onto the bed. The truck was only 3 months old when this happened. 15 years experience too.

Reminds me to do my safety checks - every time.
