Ah, I see.
I think it is so we can pay for these $100,000 houses that we paid $440,000 for...

The modifications for aftermarket axles are quite easy with the right tools. $40/hr is a cheap labor rate and at the install price you stated I would jump all over that deal. You may want to look at some of his previous welds/work and make a judgement call. In most cases OEM parts are of better quality and I would usually go with OEM but in the case of the axles I would feel very confident with Dexter. They are probably the biggest axle supplier in the US to trailer manufacturers. Parts are widely available. I performed the axle swap myself - I figure that I added a couple of hours on to the length of the job to cut/weld the shock mounts, grind away the opening in the trailer frame and bore out two of the bolt holes in the frame.

Good Luck

The power of DUH

at the risk of drawing the wrath of the professional engineers who contribute to the knowledge base here, isn't it reasonable for a vintage owner who is unsure of the ride in their camper to have a friend with a late model let them ride down a rough road in their camper and then compare it to their own? Isn't ride the real issue?
It seems to me that there are all sorts of variables that determine the rate of deterioration of the materials in the axels. A light camper with dual axels that has low milage and lived in a moderate climate may be different than a 31 footer that has 100k miles and has lived in Phoenix.

Also the amount of just plain sit time has an effect. I thought that plain old sitting has a negative effect. The axles need to move and flex to keep their trim. Much like tires. Low mileage isn't always a good thing.
