Installing new axle of a '67

I have finally bit the bullet and purchased new axles and brakes from Inland RV.

I have removed the rear axle and I am trying to install the new one, but there is a slight problem.
The axle will not go up in the slot all the way.
I have used a grinder a little on the slot and I am guessing the the axle is lacking 1/8" before it would be flush to the frame.

Do I need to keep grinding the slot? If that is the correct name...

You need to find out where it is binding. Is it in the channel? Or is it the plate on top of the axle resting on the frame? If it is the top plate then grinding out the channel will only make things worse. If I remember correctly when I put in my axle there was a small gap.

I think I remember being told by Greg at Inland that there are two sizes of square tube used on axles, and that older trailers use the smaller size and on later trailers the slots are made to accept the larger tube. Don't know for sure, but perhaps Andy can jump in.

If the axle goes up the distance, will the mounting holes line up? I think that is the key here. The flange should rest against the frame, and the mounting holes match up. Otherwise, you may have no idea where the axle should be.
