Have pair of Henschen axles - Don't know what size

I have a pair of Henshen axles, new in 2002, never used, that have been sitting in my garage for 10 years and the wife says it is time to get rid of them. They measure aproximately 81-82" from end cap to end cap and have the following inscribed on a plate on each axle:

Dura-Flex
SN #3-037655 (and 56)
3500 lb capacity
Model CAN 1970
"13"
Henshen Ind.
Jackson Center, Ohio

What size Airstream trailer would these fit? Thanks, Montanaandy

What is the dimension of the out brackets, that is from outside to outside of the mounting brackets.

Also, what is the torsion arm starting angle? That really doesn't matter much, but it would help you sell the axles, if you had that info.

How many holes are in the brake mounting flange, 4 or 5, or, is it square or round?

Henschen is gone, so I can't answer your question from the axle serial number, but I can help once I know that dimension..

Henshen Axle Dimensions

Andy:

I measured and it is approximately 57.5" between the mounting bracket plate holes on either side. The holes are round (and oval). The torsion arm angle is 45'. Thanks. Montanaandy

Number Of Holes On Henchen Axle

Andy:

There are two oval shaped mounting holes on the bottom plate (one on either end) and 2 round holes at one end and one oval hole at the other end for a total of 5 holes (I guess). Thanks Montanaandy

The good news is that your axles should measure 57 7/8 inches for the out brackets.

Thst dimension was used from the 1961 to 1968 models.

The 3500 pound rating was never used by Airstream back then on a tandem axle trailer. The maximum rating for a tandem setup from 1961 to the late 70's was 3200 pounds. However, that rating today, can be used on the 26 foot and up trailer lengths.

The bad news, is that the 45 degree starting angle will play havoc with an Airstream trailer.

Back when I got involved with the henschen axles, Airstream and Henschen engineering both said "35 degrees maximum" for a torsion arm starting angle.

That's why we supplied replacement Henschen axles with a 35 degree torsion arm starting angle.

Hope this helps you.

Andy

Henshen Axles

Andy:

The angle must be 35' then - I got the axles from you (Inland) back around 2001 or 2002 (can't recall exactly). They were drop shipped from the factory here in MT. As I mentioned in an earlier post, they have just sat on the garage floor for 10 years and are the same as they were the day they were delivered so whatever the standard torsion angle was for them, that is what it is still at. Thanks, Montanaandy.

Your correct.

We shipped all axles at a 35 degree down angle, unless an original angle of 22 1/2 degrees was special ordered.

Our axle records go back to 2002.

Hi Mountana Andy:

Are your axles available for sale? I might be interested if they would fit my '85 25-footer.

Thanks,

Art

Andy:

I've tried several times to obtain a quote for a set of axles for my '85 25-footer. Gave you the VIN about a month ago and haven't heard back.

I bought a set from you in '09 and it was a piece of cake. You must be slammed.

Any luck in getting a price quote for a set of 3500# axles with electric brakes and balancing disks?

Thanks,

Art
