grease seals for wheel spindles

I hope this posts all right. Tried before and didn't see it in the forum.
I have a '94 excella with twelve inch brakes. Does anyone know the part number for the grease seals required when repacking the wheel bearings?

Good question. While we are at it I need to repack the bearings on our 31' 2003 Classic. What type of grease to use and what are the part numbers for the grease seals. Oh yea, how much do they cost for all four spindles? Anybody!

Dexter 12" drums use a 2.25" seal. The best seal (double lip, spring loaded) costs $1.69 from Low Cost Trailer Supplies. Get a dozen. http://www.lowcosttrailersupplies.co...s/a-10-36.html

Thanks for the info. Does that mean that the brake assemblies are Dexter? How would I check for sure?

Thumbs up

Do any of these specs apply to the Henshen(sp?) axles on the newer Airstreams?

BigAl & RivetED,

I'm going with what I've heard elsewhere, which is that Henschen axles use Dexter hubs and drums. Can't be sure that they don't make their own, or use someone elses.

I sure someone else can provide the info.

Even if they are Dexter hubs, it's possible that the spindle is 2.125" instead of 2.250". Dexter uses a 2.250" spindle, but Henschen's might be 2.125". ??? If that's the case, there is a different seal, also listed at the web site above.

You can measure the spindle, or if you report the inner bearing numbers on your axle, I could look it up for you. .

I asked this question at the Airstream factory during the tour a few days ago (mid-April 2005). The axles are Henschen, but all the brake parts are Dexter. I didn't ask about spindles.

I just replaced a grease seal on one of my 12" brakes. I ordered the part from a Dexter supplier, Haskin's Hitching Post in Cincinnati. Their phone number is 513-542-1733. The double-lip seal that they recommended was part number 10-36. The single-lip seal is part number 10-54. I ordered two of the double-lip seals. They came to about $13, delivered to my door. Mark got a better price.

I took my old seal to my trailer supply, it was a 2.250" seal they matched it up and I bought enough to do the trailer plus one. Save one old seal and use it to assist in putting the new one in.
