Extending axle mounting plates

Has anyone ever extended the axle mounting plate?

It would allow for deeper tanks and more road clearance.

Any thoughts?

And if new axles are in your future you can order them with a "High profile mount". Not sure how high is ava. but I ordered mine + 1 inch. You'll be surprised how much difference that 1" makes backing into high angle sites added to the 3 inches on a new X. Also you can order increased down angle for even more clearance.

All torsion axled Airstream's came with 22 1/2 degree down angle arms (with the exception of a few smaller late model trailers), however when you order new axles, you can opt for 32 degree down angle for no extra charges. Most of our clients stay with the original down angle, however a few wanted greater ground clearance due to local camping preferences or driveway concerns. Keep in mind that deeper tanks will create other drain plumbing problems so think it all out before making the jump. We've installed a lot of the Vintage Trailer Supply grey tanks, allowing you a flush bellypan, along with the option to add capacity by installing multiples.
Good luck,
Colin

Any concerns with adding 1" or the 32 degree angle? Effect on towing?

It raises the center of gravity & drag, but not to the point of being unsafe.

Saw one at Timeless in Denver that had been raised a huge amount. The owner wanted it raised up since he took it into rugged terrain in the Dakotas as I remember.

Thanks. I've got two axles on my 1979 that I am hoping to do this summer.
