Does this torsion arm look ok?
I posted this picture on the general repair section, as part of a continuing conversation, but thought it would be better here in the axle/wheels forum.
We are considering a 68 Sovereign and are trying to determine if the axles are still ok, or need replacing. Can someone look at the photo and tell in the tortion arm looks in the correct position? The photo was shot from the front of the left tire, shooting towards the back of the unit.
(Apologies for the poor pix).
Thanks
Ann

If the arm is point down, it's O.K. If the arm is horizontal, it is in poor condition and should be replaced soon. If the arm points up, it IS bad and needs to be replaced immediately as dframe damage may accur.
I posted info on my experience on axles at http://overlander.archnevada.com/index.php?axles

Thanks Buttercup. I wish I could have gotten a better photo. After seeing your pictures I understand what I'm looking for better.
Unfortunately, this unit is about 2 hours from me, so I can't pop out and look again.

Can anybody look for you?? Bad axles aren't always a deal breaker. They are easy to change – at least mine were.
I wish I could understand the prospective the photo’s were taken but still I can’t see the arm in them so it’s hard to say.

Ok; I have been looking at the wrong thing all along; no wonder you can't tell!
I would love to have someone look at this, and would be happy to pay for some advice, but I don't know anyone in the area. Is there anyone in the Erie Pa area that you know of?

Have you checked the volunteer inspector's list? It is in the thread "so you want to buy a trailer that's 3 states away?".

The following article will help you be a well qualify torsion axle inspector, in just a couple of minutes.

Thanks both of you. I had read both the axle article and the list of inspector's previously.
But I didn't see anyone in this area for inspecting.

Near Erie
Ann,
I live just south of Erie, I'm not a great inspector but I could go take a few pictures for you and see which way the arm is pointing.

Thank you so much for the offer!
However, I think we are going to continue looking. We found several other things wrong; two plexi windows, rooted flooring, windows leaking, poorly repaired patch to the body...
But mostly we are dealing with someone not disclosing the true condition of this. After asking him he admitted he knew of these problems (and didn't mention any of it). Makes me worried about dealing with him; I'd rather deal with someone who seems a bit more forecoming.
Besides, it's the first one we've looked at!
