Dexter says "subtract tongue weight from GVWR to determine Axle rating"
Quote:
"The axle capacity is usually determined by subtracting the hitch load from the Gross Vehicle Weight. The remainder will be the load to be carried by the axle(s). When making this calculation, be sure to consider the final load distribution. If the weight is shifted off-center laterally, the load imposed on the wheel(s) on the side closest to the load center will be greater. The load on the heavier side must not exceed one half the rated capacity of the axle(s)."
Source: Page 10 Dexter Applications Manual, downloaded today. November 15, 2018.
This means that if my Airstream is 6,300 GVWR and my Tongue is 1,000, my 3,000 axles can easily handle 6,300 pounds... so no new axles needed. They are only carrying 5,300 pounds, and my hitch (actually) 950 pounds.
Also, they are currently tracking at about 5 degree down, and Dexter further states that under load, your arms should be near zero degrees...
So, according to the guys that build these things. I'm good.
Yay!

Do you know the individual axle load?
Or side load?
That is part of the directions as well. Typically each wheel position can be loaded un-equally.

This isn't new....but little known. As long as one adheres to the numbers, their statements are true and logical.

Good point.
At least, get a trailer weight loaded for camping with WD set and get axles that total 500lb more than the actual weight on them.

Example...I have 7640lb on the Classics axles and would get 2 4000lb if I was going to replace them.
But I'm a bit anal about it and unload them during storage...SFSG. 😗
For Guitarman...

Yes, you are good to go. You might also jack up each wheel to see the range of Travel eft in the axle. My 6800 gvwr trailer carries 5600 on the axles when we travel. Not quite the whole tongue wt is carried by the tv. The ad hitch transfers some back to the trailer.0

We have a 600 amp-hour lithium battery under the front sofa (about 168 pounds) along with the Magnum MS2812 converter/charger. The tongue weight is down from 1,375 when we had four 96 pound 300 amp hour 6Vdc batteries in a custom stainless steel enclosure on the tongue behind the propane tanks.
We also have the Disc brake pump and controls in the original battery box.
