Dexter Nev-R-Lube Bearing Spare Parts

We will begin extensive use of our 2006 AS (Dexter axels & Dexter hydraulic disc brakes) next year, and I have been giving thought to what I would do if I experienced wheel bearing problems while in South Sopchoppy, where they have never heard of such a bearing. I discussed this concern with Rick Kapsa of Dexter Axel, and he acknowledged that obtaining bearing service in remote areas might well be a problem.

There are two solutions to this concern.
One is to carry a Nev-R-Lube cartridge bearing (p/n 031-073-03 @$106.65) as a spare. This approach requires that the old hub/drum be removed from the TT and taken to a shop where the old cartridge can be pressed out and the new one pressed in.
The other approach is to carry a Nev-R-Lube hub/drum with a cartridge bearing and snap ring installed (p/n 008-404-80 @ $263.04) as a spare. This approach will permit me to remove the bad hub/drum assembly and install the replacement, should the failure happen anywhere.

After considerable thought, I have elected to carry both options with me. By so doing, I can get back on the road with a minimum of difficulty, and have the old hub/drum assembly rebuilt when I can reach facilities equipped to do so.

Excellent plan.

Of course, having a backup set will insure you'll never have bearing problems

I've had an extra set of bearings, seal and grease with me for 12 years and never needed them. Great insurance plan.

One more option would be simply to remove the wheel and limp into a place of repair. Have the parts sent overnight and not have $370 bucks tied up that presumably you would never need. After all you don't carry these parts for your TV.

Like Doug I have carried bearings, seals and brake parts for many years and have never needed them.
Carrying the part numbers and a phone number is a good idea though

nickmeloy,

Curious as to how your plan worked out, ever need the spares?

And the Dexter Nev-R-Lube bearing is a sealed cartridge, not necessarily as easy to get as a classic tapered cup and cone. So not a bad idea to consider a spare.

Exactly what I do. As long as you have it, you will never need it!

Why not just have your axles bearings replaced now and not worry for another 10 year if you are concerned?

It doesn't always work that way.

The design is a pair of tapered bearings in an assembly with seals. You don't really have a way to grease them. But I don't think you can say that they can't wear out.

This same style is used on a bunch of passenger car wheel bearing applications, Ford and Chrysler mostly. Press out old, press in new, install retaining clip and then criticality tighten to torque specs. Dexter published a process.

The reason I searched this topic is a friend with nev-r-lubes just finished having them replaced. Found 1 tire wearing badly as symptom. A bit of confusion followed regarding repair options.

Has anybody on this forum ever had a never-lube failure? I would think that their track record is a little better than the old cup and bearing set up. Bearings seem to have an unpredictable life span in general so it can't hurt to have a spare. Also for myself I know if I have a spare I'll never need it, it's fun to trick Murphy!
