My axles fail one test but pass another, still bad?
The trailing arms are high enough that I can't see them from the other side. I have to look between the tire and the frame to see them and there are up. Failed that test.

I put one wheel on two 2x6s and the other wheel (on the same side) touched the ground with just enough pressure that I couldn't turn it. I think thats a pass.

Are my axles bad?

Hey Not Done,
I just motored by Marysville with my silver palace an hour ago. I think if you search the forums you'll find all the info you need.

My axels are on their last legs as they are about horizonal but still have a little flex to them. It's a future project but not stopping me from the open road.

I think they start out at 22 deg down unloaded and sit about 10 deg down loaded and move to around 5 or 10 deg up on shock load so if yours are above horizonal now there isn't much left.

A good rule of thumb is if they're 30 years old or older, it's wishful thinking to suppose that they could still provide the suspension they were intended to.

While seemingly a daunting task, axle replacement isn't really that difficult if you do your homework first. Not only will it improve the ride (and save the coach), you'll receive all new brakes, hubs, bearings which will be better balanced than the originals.

Another way to test the function of the axles is to get your trailer rocking. I have heard that if you jump up and down, the trailer should stop rocking after two bounces, just like a car does when you test the shocks. I am sure an axle distributer will send you a PM with his catalog picture soon as he sees this thread and will tell you that yours are shot and should be replaced right away.

Yes.

If any of the axle tests fail, then the axle is bad.

I was bringing it home from Camano, I keep it up there but I need to spend some time with it before we head to Banks Lake Memorial week.

There is a rally at Demming in August I think, we'er going to try and make that one. We made a day trip to it last year and it looked like a lot of fun.

Keep me posted on the axels, I'd be interested in how your replacement goes if you go that route. Might even be able to lend a hand.
