Here is a pictorial of our Saturday project. Since it was 07-07-07 we thought it would be a lucky day to do the axles.
Picture 1- Before
2- One down
3- Two coming down
4- #2 down. The part we feared the most is over!
5- Look Ma no wheels!
6- Oops..need that part
7- Say cheese
8- Looking busy
9- One up
10-Second axle up

From the way the trailer sits in the before pic, it looks like the old axles still had some life left in them. Am I wrong or did you wake up thinking "I don't have anything better to do, I think I'll change some axles"?

Note the piston jack between the two wheels giving some "assistance" to the old axles for the photo op. I suspect without the jack the axles sat much lower.

They are GKN (Henschen) axles I bought from Inalnd. 3500 Lb, 35 degree down angle. I ordered them complete with new brakes. I then had the drums precision balanced individually so that I do not have to move tire wheel and drum around as an assembly if I need to rotate.

The picture is a little decieving. The swing arms were positive by about 5 -7 degrees. So if there was any life in them it certainly wasn't much and I did not want to start bottoming out and getting into more costly repairs on top of new axles. As well the old axles were completely original (1974) and I certainly feel better knowing exactly what I have now.

It was Ralphs fault..yeah that's it, it was Ralphs fault he threw the wrong parts away. Sorry Ralphie I am trying to maintain some dignity here since my wonderful, sweet and loving wife had to post that one.
