Axle Rating Question

I need axles for a 1970 27' overlander. What gvw rating do I need for this trailer? What did it come with? I will be adding a gray water tank and a couple batteries over what was the standard weight. Ive tried Collin Hyde but he doesn't return emails.

Many axles will have a tag on them stating load rating.

And there is supposed to be a tag on the trailer stating GVWR and I think axle rating.

For the process you are doing I would highly recommend weighing the trailer. If empty tanks add weight for fluids and all possible gear that you have now and will ever have in the future. Then take that number and multiply by 110% to 125%. Divide by two axles and you have a weight rating desired for your job.

This link may be of value to you as well. https://www.airstream.com/service/document-archive/
It would be a starting place.

Lastly know that RVs like humans tend to gain weight as they age. Just a thought.

Thanks. I cant really weigh it because it is on jack stands in my shop. I have it stripped down to the floor, frame and skin. I had to do a major rear floor repair in what was the bathroom. So now I want to start putting it back together but I will prob use it some before I totally finish the inside build out. It will be some what heavier upon completion.

That is why I posted the Airstream link. Go there look up your unit and you should be able to find the "dry" weight of the trailer when it was built.

You are making changes now that will impact total load. Those changes could be added to the "designed" load, add fluids and things you will pack and at least be in the ball park for axle load selection.

And given the choice of load rating go to the next higher after you have done all of the math.

Using that link the heaviest Overlander was just under 4600 pounds. Add fluids and gear and any heavy changes. You will be between 5000 to 5500. Multiply by 110 to 125% and you are in the 5500 to 6800+ range

Divide by 2 and the axle capacity is 2750 to 3400 pounds. Depending on the cut of the choices go to the next heaviest torsion axle.
