Axle installation

I picked a new set of Axis axles this week and installed the first one today. Everything went smoothly but I have nor remaining question. The new axles do not have a hole in the spindle and no cotter pin. What holds the big notched nut in place?

If you have the Safe-T-lube spindle, there will be a locking tang washer behind the nut that has a tang on it that is bent to hold the nut in place. There is a description in your Axis axle owner's manual on page 3.

I have Axis axles. The spindle is hollow to allow grease to flow to the rear bearing. A cotter pin thru the middle would not let the Safe T Lube design work.

I appreciate your answering my question. My axles didn't come with any instructions but after staring at the washer for a while I finally figured out how it works. Thanks again.

Military Jeeps (M38/M38A1) had a similar set up for securing the lock nuts and they worked fine. Just don't get excited and OVERLOCK them in as you will want to remove them fairly often to repack your bearings.
