Are these axles shot or what??
I just noticed this photo from the VAC sight and saw that the axles look completely shot.

Early models had leaf spring suspensions and sat much lower (in relation to the wheelwell) than the 62 and later torsion type models.
Congrats on 4 rivets!

Better refer this one to "Andy of Inland".

The axles are not bad.
The trailer is kneeling to honor the "Mural," and to let the photographer see more of the Rock Carvings.
Look at the back end of the truck. It's not doing a good job of standing at "attention," for the Mural.

That's from all those lovely caravan souveniers Wally picked up along the way!

It may just be the camera angle, but every time I look at that photo the entry door jumps out at me - - it seems like it is much further forward than was typical for coaches of that era.

Clearly, the low rider, forward entry model.
I agree, Kevin. Most of the trailers that size would have had a window of sorts forward of the entry door. And, if it was a Tradewind, then the door would be in the way of the dinette or goucho. Strange.
Perhaps this is one of those front kitchen or front bath models.

The reason the door is so far forward is because thats the access for where they tie up the elephants - you see its important to have the weight as far up front as possible - this is why you see the trailer leaning forward and the truck leaning back. What you don't see in the picture is the big door in the rear of the trailer to put the elephants in. Look at the forward most window - if you look very carefully, you'll see one of the elephants checking out the lady holding the hat. The man and the women on the right are pointing at the elephant saying "wow can you believe that elephant is checking out our daughter?" Its obvious they have no interest in the mural.

I wonder how much truck space this factory modified model has in it?

Mine rides about 2 inches above the rim. Is that a good spacing? Ir appears that my axles have never been replaced. Is it crazy to go on an 8 week trip out west without new axles?
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, go West young man! Fear not, for thine axels are just fine. I replaced my axles last year. The tires, brakes and bearings are of more concern than the suspension.
