'94 34' Excella Classic Limited

Iím a new member and Iím looking at a 1994 (built 8-31-1993) the ad says 94, 34 foot Excella Classic, Limited, not sure what the title says. Anyway, I went into town to look at this, the owner is out of town, house is up for sale too, not plugged in, no batteries so I could not try anything. About all I could do was look at the basic shape and it doesnít look bad.
Here is what I donít like. The center tire on the curb side is down to the steel belts on the outer edge, the center and the inside of the tire look fine. I canít see that it is bent, the driver side looks fine and all the other tires are good. Do you think itís an alignment problem? Have done a lot of reading on this site but have not seen this one.
It is missing both corner window stone guards and on the curb the lower guard where it attaches has a repair.
Any ideaís what would make the tire do that? I see the axels are rated 2800lbs. Anyone have a guess how much to replace all the axels?
They are asking $12,500.

Since the wear is only on the outside of the tire, I would say it is just an alignment problem. There are places that can bend the axle to fix it, but I am not sure who is available in Alaska. It should cost less than $500 to fix it. I would test the axles to see how much life is left in them but they should check out OK. Test procedure is simply jack up the trailer and measure how far the move down. Some people just jump on the bumper and see how well they move to absorb the load.

It is a triple axle trailer and the tires are known to "scuff" really bad when making tight turns. I'll bet that is the problem.

The six wheelers do scuff but the wear is usually even on the front or rear tire. The picture shows it as the middle tire, that tire position does not usually scuff. It could be you have a dragging brake.

If the center tire was rotated out of another position it might explain the wear. The other reason might be axle alignment. Taking a string and stretching it across all 3 tires of the same side might tell you a story. The string should touch the side wall of all 3 tires as it is pulled tight against the front and rear tire. If both sidewalls of the center tire touch the string I would NOT suspect axle mis-alignment of the center axle.

(From the owner in an email)
“It hasn’t been used in 4 years just sitting the hot water heater and furnace wouldn't kick on and the water pump for the bathroom and shower didn't come on it all worked 4 years ago”

I will be going back in to town this weekend to look at it again, the owner will be there this time so he can show me around, plug it in and I can ask questions.
We can’t check the water system because it is 0į outside but will check what I can.
I will ask about if the tire was moved and pull a string and look at that.
I should know a lot more in a week or so.

Thanks
Tom, NL7TZ

What did you decide about this trailer?

Could it be that they ' rotated' the tires and the middle tire received the wear in a different placement ?
Front or rear ....

Just a thought....

Nothing yet, the last email I received said he was weathered in at work and it would be two weeks before he can get back to town. That should be this week sometime; I will go in and meet with him and report back.
The only thing about the tires is there is only one tire that and any were on it.
We will find out more soon.
Thanks

As it turns out we decided to pass on this Airstream at this time, we will keep looking and when we are in the lower 48 I think we can do better finding one.
Thanks for all your help, I will be around here looking and learning all I can.

Tom,
You're probably smart to keep on looking. There's a lot of learning to be done before buying an Airstream or any older travel trailer for that matter. Keep learning and keep looking!

All my best,

Steve
