1975 Sovereign 31' axles

At the Airstream repair rally I was informed my axels are SHOT.
So have decided to replace them. I just recently put on Dexter Self Adjusting brakes (man do they stop you) but would transfer them to a new axel.
Problem service manual does not give the axel specs.
I have been told get 3000 to 6000 lb ones????
I get the following dimensions..71 11/16 hub to hub, 61 7/16 frame to frame. Is this reasonable???
Would it be wise to take a old axel to the new supplier to make sure it is right??
Do I really need the shocks???
Really appreciate any input.

Most axles have a tag on them telling the capacity, wouldn`t hurt to bump it up 500-1000#,if your going to spend the bucks on axles then get the shocks too. Dave

Just call Andy at Inland, order the axle only w/o brakes, fit great.
