Thank you for the kind words.
I can pretty much tell you the axle needs replacement. When first offered, Airstream advertised them as "worry free, never needing maintenance or to be replaced"
Now we know they last about 15 years.
Hope it goes well. I have a special place for 1964 trailers due to this project and if you need any advice or help, feel free to ask.

Do all brands of axles have the same issue or just the Dexter? Can you tell me why you use Dexter over some other brand?

Who are you directing your question to?

Andy

There are only three axle options. One is in Texas and the shipping is a killer. The second has decided that it will only sell axles to one guy who then makes a significant mark up reselling them to a semi captive audience. I do not like monopolies so I do not buy those. If a client wants those and has them shipped to me, I will put them on, but reluctantly. The third option(Dexter) is sold by many distributors. I have one, one mile from my shop, that sells them to me at just above their cost. I am able to pass that savings on to my clients and generally it allows them to spend a little more on the long list every owner has when they bring a trailer in. The distributor, customer, and myself all win this way instead of being gouged right off the bat.
I do like the Dexter axle the best however even if it does not come with a shock mount attached to it.

Just to back track... this thread was started to alert those who own 1964 units that the mounting plate it not very tall. It has to be extended to catch the bolts. It is simple enough to do by welding on some more metal to the bottom. I did not intend to start yet another Grand Axle Debate
