1957 Spartan Excecutive Mansion Axle Replacement
Hi guys,
We are currently working on getting a 55 Spartan road ready for a long trip to Texas.
Long story short, we sold it to a couple in texas and we want to help as much as possible to get it there.
Safety first a vigorous inspection has revealed the need of new springs and possibly new drums/hubs.
please take a look at post #10 in here
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f417...se-124697.html
Does anyone here has some previous experience on replacing the axles on a Spartan or getting parts for?
The hub and axles are great, is the "armored plate" where the magnets slides what is the biggest. If it helps can post pics here...
any help will be great.
Thanks

I would suggest google search for Redneck Trailer supply.
We replaced the axles on our airstream this spring---- expect to pay between 1500 and 3000 plus labor.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the reply,
We had been there, wasn't able to take the old axle out to be 100% sure if we can get a perfect match.
These are not torsion axles so they are not that crazy expensive.
A new axle with the 4 inches drop is only a little over $500, the only issue is that the original axles has 0 (zero) offset and the new ones they have a 3 inches off set.....
I guess that can be a huge issue...?

Don't know exactly what you are looking for, but these folks have a fleet of used Spartans and might have some info or parts.

thanks for the link!
Will call tomorrow and see if they have anything.
our main issue is that everything looks great except the flat plate inside the drum where the magnet slides.
That part is most likely impossible to get new, and almost certain that its beyond saving.
Backing plates with new brakes we can get at Redneck Trailers Supply, but it appear that the hub will be the issue....

I would remove one of the complete axles, with leaf springs and all, and take it to Rockwell American Trailer in Plant City, FL. Have them measure and make you new axles.

thanks for the reply TOP.
We are told that a new axle will have a 3 inches offset and that the current one is 0.
We are concern that a big offset won't allow to get the wheel in and of since they are "half hidden"?

Hello All
I am the other involved party that is doing the work to the original posters trailer....this 50' long Spartan trailer is going to be moved one time from FL to TX and then put on blocks not to be moved again anytime soon. This is the main reason for not initially wanting to replace with new axles. (However it is still being considered) In addition, his other 2 Spartans that he owns in TX can also someday utilize these same hubs/drums when needed!
New axles have to be custom made as nothing is available "off the shelf". This equates to a much higher price than just replacing with good used drums.
These were used on many years of airstreams. Many of which have been are are in process of being udated and replaced as you all are suggesting. We are hoping to find 2 someones who are presently doing so now!
What we actually are looking for are 4 of 1950 to late 1960's 26', 24', and possibly 22' single axle brake drums as these seem to all have come with 12"x2" Kelsey Hays brakes. I don't know exactly which year they did away with the 8 sided, threaded on grease cap...but that is what we are looking for. I may have 2 located here allready and may just need 2 more!
It's a shame that these drums are getting scrapped as the bigger vintage trailers that use these only get moved a couple times a year or even less... and these original Kelsey Hays drums will last them for another 30 + years at that rate!
Please! Help us find them!
