1959 door handle update
Thanks for the update John and thanks for working this, I'm sure that none of us want to rush perfection
I have a good base plate but new would be nice, go ahead and count me in on it too.
Sure would be nice if we could get a few more interested folks in on this project. If sounds like it is not if this door handle brakes. It is more like when is door handle brakes.
later,

..I'm going to be passing through Lubbock on my way to Colorado this weekend and will get together with my cousin - he will be able to see my door handle in person and give us a good description of the process and cost. I'll post something when we get back.
John.

Vintage door handle casting
I finally got word from my cousin on the cost of a door handle set (base plate + handle) and it's higher than I expected - his rough estimate from looking at the pictures is about $210 before chroming. He is checking with the local chrome shop on the price for that. At last count there were 10 people interested. I will post the chroming cost as soon as I hear back from him; then take another poll to see who is still in the market.
Thanks for your patience.
John.

I could use one as well. Our 61 Overlander's lock is missing, its otherwise in good condition on the outside. I do also need the inside latch piece on the trailer end.
Andy once told me your SOL if your door handle is broken!
Let me know what the outcome is on manufacturing one, my wife won't camp in it without a lock!

John,
Steve can have my reservation. I'm sure they are worth the time and effort you and your cousin have put into it. My sincere thanks, but I only needed a spare in case mine broke. $210 is a reasonable price, but not in my budget right now.
My door set is dis-assembled for tumbler maintenance, if you need mine for a pattern it's available. I have the handle and baseplate, both in near pristine condition.

According to the '59 Trade Wind page on RJ's archive website (mine's the top one), he claims the Bargman L-66 door handle is still available. Guess I need to contact him to find out where to get one. I'll post here when I find out more info. Wish me luck.

I saw that too - I can't imagine its true or he may be talking about the refrigerator style handle (like what is on my 58) ..... that handle I know is still available from someone who is having them cast.

I'm sure glad Airstream changed to the Chesler door knob in '61, at least the Bargman L 100 is a (cheaper) replacement. I do like the look of those Frigidaire handles though.

That's the Bargman L-66 handle--like on my '62 Avion.
There are tons of places to buy them.
My local RV place stocks them.
Or get them here-

OK, now one of you has to find me a door handle for my '56 Safari.

thanks to Chuck;
I just found the Bargman L-200 that I was searching for at a very good price from MOVILE-MART. The handle also broke off on mine (inside) on my "58 Traveler. Thanks again, Chuck.

FYI - L100 and L200 are the same lock, just different inside handles - one has a handle the other a knob

That L-100 /200 fits a 58? Does the outside handle come with it?

Is the Bargman L-200 the refrigerator handle style or round knob? I'm still looking for one! I prefer the handle over the knob. Just to reiterate, Andy at Inland RV sells the round knob style (Bargman-100). I saw a picture of it while I was there picking up parts. It looks good. You have to rivet in a new plate on the outside of the door which I think detracts from the original look. However, it is functional and is a viable option for some. I'm still looking for the handle though!

Just did some research the L-200 is not the same refer style handle on me 61 Overlander. And as KenJ stated in a previous thread the L-66 is a horizontal not vertical handle. Has anyone come up with anything? I don,t think my wife will go on another trip with the kids if we don't have a lock, the bungee cord only lasts so long!

The new bargman locks have knobs for the outside - not a handle - for the inside you can choose a knob or a horizontial handle.
Paul - I believe the 58 is a refrigerator type handle - at least that is what my 58 has. That handle is available as long as the rest of the lock is ok.

What excactly is breaking? Has anyone tryied to repair one? I have the Bargman L-200 and I was just about to order one when I decided to look and see what had broken inside. All that was broken was the square shaft that goes from the handle (inside). It is held to the handle with a pressed pin in the handle itself. It also has a groove for a spring pin that holds the handle and shaft to the inside square plate. This groove is the weakest place on the shaft and that's where mine broke. It took me about 1/2 hr to fabricate one out of 5/16 sqare stock with hand tools. I saved $39.95 plus shipping.

Here's a picture of my second door handle. You can see why it was donated. This is where they usually break, either here of just above where this one broke. It is cheap potmetal that can't even hold being chromed over time so it would be difficult to repair.
