Bathroom floor tiles

I have just about all the original blue/green speckle? bathroom floor tiles from my '67 Overlander. The floor rotted from underneath, so the tiles are intact.

Most are in good enough shape to reinstall (as in floor repair) if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
Tom

A post by 53FlyingCloud in another thread stated that 9X9" tiles contained asbestos. Airstream went to 12X12" when they changed over evidently... Thanks for your kind offer, but what type are they?

These tiles measure 12X12". If they do contain asbestos, for a repair job, I would think that as long as the tiles were not cut with a motorized saw, asbestos would not be a big issue.

I would be comfortable with using them to patch an existing floor, but will certainly not try and talk someone into doing something they perceive as unsafe.

If they are 12"x12" they:

1 - don't contain asbestos and
2 - aren't original

Non-asbestos tiles weren't "the norm" until 1973.

The way you can tell if your tiles are asbestos is if they are 9"x9". When "they" quit putting asbestos in vinyl floor tiles, the manufacturers changed the size to 12"x12" so they come tell them apart easily. So if they are 12"x12" they don't have it & if they are 9"x9" they most likely do.

I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe these are not the original tiles. I bought the Airstream from the original owner, and although I didn't ask, he never inclined the floor covering had been replaced. Plus, to get all the tiles out like I did requires disassembling the bathroom which requires disassembling just about the whole interior which I have done. There was no evidence the cabinets had ever been removed.

The kicker was ABS solvent weld dripped off the gray water line where it drops under the decking onto a tile.

In the end, it does not matter to me if these tiles were original - they are going to be replaced. But I have every reason to believe they are original, and felt the need to challenge the, "If they are 12X12 they aren't original" statement.

I stand corrected...

they may be original. VAT was the tile of choice for decades until it was discontinued for residential application in 1973. Manufacturers had until 1978 to deplete their stock and cease distribution. There were some 12"x12" tiles that contain asbestos, however 12"x12" tiles were not the norm...9"x9" were.

If they are 9"x9" they have asbestos. period. The manufacturers switched over to 12"x12" as standard when asbestos quit being used to easily differentiate them from the asbestos containing 9"x9" tiles.

The other exception I have heard of would be if 12"x12" tiles were cut down to 9"x9" size...which has been done.
