Hey, I hope no one on this forum is bidding for the Airstream Jack Base Pad that is currently up for auction on e-Bay. Good GRIEF! It is a used, beat up jack base pad and the bidding is up to over $90 for it! ATTENTION!! The exact same aluminum base pad, BRAND NEW, can be had from Airstream.com's on-line store for $48. Do these bidders on e-Bay have a clue??
I'll venture a guess who bought one for $585 -- the same people who bought a $5,000 toilet seat -- Yup, the federal gov't. Who else would spend money like that?
So now what am I supposed to do with my original jack plate? I had no idea they were worth more than, maybe $10.
I certainly can't take it out and use it if it's worth that much.
There must be one of these for every trailer built. What caused someone to think they're worth $90, let alone $585?
Is there some secret society for old jack plate owners? Do they have some unknown use I'm not aware of? If you gather together a critical mass of old jack plates can you control the electoral college?
Wow, I had no idea that thing could be so valuable! And the jackpad was the one part that I was really amazed to see still with the 1967 rig when we bought it!

Some of the vintage guys will pay big bucks to get "the" part. Sometimes the restorer mentality kicks in and the "have"to have it because it is OEM. If I had a vintage I would just get the $50.00 one, but that's me.

If you go to the vintage rallies not only is there an open house, but quite often there is a concourse judging. I think the Antique car format is what they use, I know for sure they do it at International.

At the Rocky Mountain Rally, we only have an Open House although competitions have been discussed by the planning committee, we have chosen not to have them.
Our thought has been we want to have everybody, in every stage of restoration (or not) feel welcome to attend the rally whether or not their trailer is perfect. Last year we actually had two trailers & their owners who had been together less ten 10 days each. Also one where the interior was almost completely gutted and they just used sleeping bags on the floor....come one come all! Everybody always seems to appreciate the work involved when they see them in different states of destruction.
I believe some of the CA rallies have competitions though...

So I'm still trying to figure out why somjeone paid $585 for an 'authentic' jack pad. Unless it was for a very competitive judged concours competition, what's the point?
A friend of mine competes in the antique car venues, and he has to know what type of wood was used in the door panels, the formulation of the paint, stuff like that.
Nice to know that the recent reproduction jack plates can be distinguished from the originals. If I was the guy that paid $585 for the jack plate, I'd be upset if Airstream made an exact duplicate.
Ok, ok, ok, if anybody would mind paying me $585 for our very original 1967 jack pad, I'll gladly sell it and buy one of Andy's reproductions. Sorry, no credit accepted; cash only.
