Dang it ! ! I just saw this thread. Oh well, maybe next time. I want some aluminum tanks in the worst way just not ready to pay the new tank prices just yet.
For those who know me, know that I am computer inept, so my elder son took pictures of some of the items for sale, and he is handling the photo part. I realised I also have a floding door vinyl curtain ????? that seperates kitchen from center bunk area that is also going. Probably more things as we go on. The propane coleman light is really cute, not at all like a regular camping coleman lantern. This is something I haven't seen in any of the trailers' pictures. About 8" high, attaches to the frige wall facing the table and has a gas line to it. Does anyone know the history of this light? silver suz
Fundave- My husband found a pinhole leak in the water heater right by the inlet. It would have to be soldered. Depending on how fast you want it ,my son can weld it mid-May. I don't know how this affects your decision. He found it late last night while checking it out and getting the info on it. So, it's up to you. Pick it up and you can have it. Sorry, I can't deal with shipping. suz
Fundave, I'm sorry but a local guy offered more money and is picking up the stuff. I just want it to go away. too bad you arent closer. But not being able to drive- shipping it is too hard for me. sorry, silver suz (
I am interested in the refrig, can you crate it for shipping? If so I will look into the cost of pickup & shipping to Phoenix, and then I could make an offer- (I will need to have the gas working too, so I will probably need to get an estimate for repair also, since you arent sure if it works)
Baja, I would love to help you, but as I said in the ad, I just can't be involved with the shipping. I can't drive. And I can't get near propane to check if the fridge works. What I can do is wait for my son to come home from college to build the crating. And I would be worried about it getting damaged in shipping. Where would it be shipped? Hawaii or baja? Would love to bring it to baja! but cant get near it. Perhaps a local forum member could check it for you, and another could take it to you in baja. I dont know why you would go to the trouble of getting such a far away fridge, unless you're a purist and restorationist. Why phoenix? I just noticed that!!! I mostly worry about being able to crate it properly, seeing how the new stuff is crated. I dont have the ability to do that. sorry, we'll see if something eventually works out. But if you find a CA ref or one in AZ you would be better off. sorry, but keep in touch, Silver suz P.S. Love to know about your layout as it's the same year and model as mine! Mine was a back bath. Now you can see through to the drive!!
Well, first off its a rear bath - same as yours. I bought it at an estate sale, and had no previous knowledge of any type of trailer, and as I have come to find out, I really got it for a song. I have lots of questions about all sorts of things, and am learning as I go. As far as I can tell its all original, except for the fridge. The previous owner tore out the three way power Dometic, (along with several other things, now that I have seen pictures of other's trailers) and installed an apartment size Westinghouse. Where the trailer is in Baja, I have no electricity, hence the need for gas power. Baja is a nice change of pace from Hawaii. There is no place along the West Coast of the Continental US where you can find warm water, and get away from it all. The trailer is located in a small fishing village on the Pacific Coast, 30 miles off Mexico Highway 1 about a 24 hour drive from the San Diego border. The village has a population of about 300, so there is just enough there for what you need, but not so convienent that a lot of people are clammering to get there. The local people are very friendly. Since I have to work, and only have a few weeks vacation each year until I retire, I cant justify putting a new fridge in. Besides, I kind of would like to put it back to original. (you dont happen to have any of those roller doors for the cabnets where the sink is?) Why Phoenix? Well because my brother lives there, and its a great bone dry place to keep my van while its waiting for me. There are now nonstop flights from Honolulu to Phoenix- how convienent. As far as shipping, I would have it insured for damages, and have a trucking company pick it up from its present location, and deliver it to my brothers house, where my van is. (I am guessing shipping to be around $100, but I'm not sure since I dont know what the weight is- I would have to check with Dometic). then have it checked out and any repairs made, then when I get there in June, it gets loaded into the van, and away we go. I will keep looking for a closer one, and keep you informed.
Oh wow- are you in for it. Ask if there are any members nearby who can check out the trailer for you to see what needs to be done. I have bought the horrendously expensive manual for our trailers- so can fax any pages you need. I was a newby too. Turns out there is a big problem with our year and length- rear end sag. where the weight of the black water tank and bathroom has caused the back end to sag. Hopefully you bought the trailer in a dry climate like phoenix, so these's less chance of rot. If you have a caretaker for the trailer (is this a trailer park?), have them put lots of rodent poison inside (I'm chemically sensitive- so it's amazing I would suggest that) and the "snakeaway" powder under the trailer. you can also sprinkle boric acid crystals on the floor. What you don't want to come home to, is a nest of scorpions in your fiberglass insulation, or some other charming creatures. If the trailer is going to be kept in one place then, the dreaded "rear end sag" is not so much of a problem. I would suggest you look into solar panels for extra energy, and for the times the notorious Mexican electricity fails. However ,I haven't been to baja so I dont know.
warm water and the pacific ocean is an interesting juxtaposition of words!! Having lived in the Monterey bay area for 21 years, the water temp was around 54 degrees all the time.
Do you snorkel or scuba? Is there much in the way of small colorful reef fishes or is it mostly sea lions, whales- etc in Baja? I have spent a lot of time in the carribbean and am "fish" person much like a birder is with a life list.! I spent about 7 weeks at the very southern end of Mexico and was disappointed at the sea life there.
I may have "roller doors". as we haven't quite figured out that end of the trailer yet. Still working on the DREADED REAR END SAG problem! As we do plan to tow it a lot. I do have pictures in the picture gallery of the trailer being "cleaned out". Oh I also have the stove and the burners for sale I forgot to put that up for bid. It is now required to have special fittings put on the propane tanks (in the USA) they might not care for such niceties in MX, but to get them filled in the USA, you will need them modified- cost about $35 each. It's a safety thing. This forum is EXtremly helpful and just reading through things, you can learn a lot. There is an airstrean parts dealer in Phoenix (or near). I'd stock up on vulkem and the various sealers recommended here.
Maybe it is a good idea to spring for the service manual ($75.) and have your brother read it. Look at the thread where I asked Andy from Inland RV where to get it. (Andy is our Airstream Guru) Just type "service manual" in the "search" function at the top of the page. We actually get the 1973 manual but it covers 1971. Is there anyone down there who you can have check the AS? Like are the screens ok, any broken windows, noticeable leaks, does the water turn on? (I definately would bring a whole house water filter to filter your water for everything that has water come out of it! I'd go prepared with a lot of general tools. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. If you have any questions , ask these guys on the forum, they are very happy to pass their experience along. Good Luck!! silver suz
Thanks for the encouraging (?) news, but I dont think I have rear end sag. I am still doing a "background check" on my trailer, but as far as I can tell it was constructed in the east coast facility, and at one time owned by some folks from Mass. The owner previous to me passed away, and I have yet to determine if that was the original owner. The trailer still has its old Wally club registration number on front & rear, but I dont know off hand what it is. In any case I purchased it in Phoenix, and it was apparently in a small trailer park a ways away from Phoenix when the owner passed away. I think the trailer was in Arizona for quite a while because it had an old licence plate on it. Anyway, its not in a trailer park, but on a small parcel of land I bought. I dont think its going to move from its present location in Baja for a while. (and believe me, there are no other members nearby, however there are two other 31' AS in the town, but much newer) Its still in a desert climate but next to the ocean. I'm not sure how much problem the salt air will cause yet. Thanks for the advice about the posion; I didnt think about that, on my next trip down to Baja I'll bring all the impliments of destruction- the trailer will have been sitting locked up for about 10 months .... it should be interesting. The town has electricity from a wind power hybrid electric facility, but my property is not serviced yet (no poles in my area). I am checking into alternate power sources, but for now it looks like propane is the best bet; solar panels are too expensive. I think I can fabricate my own small wind generator to power small things. By the way do you still have the wall mount gas lantern? That seems like it would be a good thing to have in the trailer. I have a kerosine lamp, but one running off the propane tanks would be good too. Thanks for the offer of the manual info. I photo copied a complete owners & repair manual from a borrowed 1977 airstream owner, but as I have found out some of the info does not fit - where are the fuse panels? I think I might need a lot of the electrical section. Also my oven wont light do you know if there are two valves for the oven? one for the pilot (which lights) and one for the oven burner (which does not light) I only found one, so I'm not sure if the oven is broken, or I have to look harder for a valve (this is really difficult with me being in Hawaii, and the trailer in Baja, and my visits only once a year) Everything worked when I bought the trailer; that is when hooked up to "shore power" (water pressure, electric) the stove works fine as does the heater. THe AC unit is almost new. However, the water tank will not hold water, and the onboard demand pump doesnt work (I bought a new one, but just now realized that I wont be using it because I will have water piped into my lot, and the trailer will hook up to that. Not sure about the holding tanks, but there is no place to dump them anyway, so a portable head will be used untill that is figgerd out. If you want do dive and snorkle in baja, I would recommend the Sea of Cotez side; the water is warm and clear. The pacific side is ok too, the water is cooler. As far as I can tell Baja hasnt upgraded the propane tank valves yet so my old ones are just fine for refills. I will probably transfer from a small tank that I bring in to my empty trailer tanks. I just remembered, I need a few window brackets/adjusters - the metal things that hold the window open at an angle; any ideas where to find those? I would think they were used on all models. As soon as I figger out how, I'll post a photo of "the Baja Rig".
