Wiring a Penguin II with single zone LCD thermostat

Hi all,

I'm finishing up my penguin install on the '78 Sovereign and have a wiring question. My trailer's old thermostat has the following wires:

Red
Brown
Black

The new AC unit wants the following connections:
+12v DC from supply (red wire)
-12v DC (black wire)
Thermostat 12V+ (white wire)
COMMS (orange wire)

Do you know what my red, brown and black wires are? I cannot find these wires in my '78 Service Manual.

Thanks!

I found a wiring diagram!

Red on the AC unit is a 12v constant.
Red/white on the AC unit goes to thermostat 12V+
Black on the AC unit goes to thermostat 12v-
Orange on the AC unit goes to thermostat COMM

So I suppose now I just need to get my multimeter and figure out which wire in the Airstream harness is 12v+, 12v- and COMM. Will report back.

Things have changed since 1978 and your new Penguin may not have the same thermostat connections as your old unit, or even use the same voltages.

Go slow and careful to be sure what you are doing is compatible with the new unit. It may be more than a plug and play.

That said, I am only speculating.

Hopefully, you got the complete Single Zone Thermostat (SZT) kit from Dometic that also includes the grey plastic box that houses the control board. It should also have 2 - 1/4" spade ports for your furnace connection, along with a pair of pink (18-22AWG) female 1/4" connectors for the furnace wires.

The Airstream 12VDC+ and 12VDC- should connect right to the new board on the marked wires. The wires marked with 'Thermostat' and 'Comm' will run to the SZT location, and you will need 3 of them: t/stat +, t/stat - and communication. All 3 of these emanate from the board as well. You should use 18AWG wire minimum for runs over 10 feet.

The 12VDC negatives can both be connected together at the board, but all of the other wires must be separate and distinct. That leaves a total of 5 distinct wires and 4 connections.......plus the 2 furnace wires of you want to use the SZT to control your furnace too.

Thanks, Lewster! I'm missing the control board box. I'll try to find a part number to order.

Appreciate your help!

An update from Dometic for those of you that may need this info in the future:

The AC I have, model 641916, has the control board built in. This AC will only work with the single zone LCD thermostat. I'm awaiting a wiring diagram from Dometic to be sure and will update this post once it's received.

For future reference, here's how I hooked up my Dometic 641916 15,000 BTU Penguin II Low Profile AC to the Single Zone LCD thermostat.

The three existing wires are used for the AC harness to provide power, comm and ground to the thermostat. The three existing wires are merely straight runs from the thermostat location to the AC location. There is nothing else connected in the RV harness to these wires that I'm aware of.

Find 12v+ supply from your harness somewhere near the AC, hook up the red wire on the AC unit to that (12v+ from supply). Find ground from your trailer harness somewhere near the AC. Connect the black wire from the AC unit, the ground to the thermostat and the ground from your trailer harness together. Connect your third wire from the LCD thermostat to the orange COMM wire on the AC thermostat.

Bonus: while you're in the trailer harness near the AC, hook up your furnace thermostat wires to the AC unit. Then you can use the single LCD thermostat to control both the furnace and the AC. On my unit, these were two Blue/white stripe wires. Polarity doesn't matter.
