Which Air Conditioner

Hi, my first time here so not sure if I am posting in the right place. We just purchased a 76 24' Argosy and are trying to get ready to go out this summer. I need to replace the air-conditioning unit. I am looking for a "low profile". Looking for some recommendations on a good make and model.

Also need a good fan/vet for the back hole that was enlarged to 14" from the original vent..any ideas?

Linda

Welcome to the forums!

Do a search for " low profile Air Conditioner," and i am sure you will see many threads with lots of different opinions. I put a new Dometic Penguin low profile on my roof about a year ago and have been happy with it. Dometics used to be the low profile of choice, but it seems that Coleman is offering some stiff competition.

If your air vent has been enlarged to 14" square, then it is all ready to have a Fantastic Fan installed. I have only read positive reports on them.

good luck!

I would also look for a power saving or low energy AC unit, especially if you are going to ever run it on a generator. Some of the newer power saving AC's, 13,500 btuh variety, take only 10 to 11 amps vs. the standard 13.5 to 15 amps. That is a significant difference when running on something like a 2000 watt inverter generator.

I have not researched them recently. They may not be made in the low profile versions. One way they gain efficiency is by having more coil area and that may require a standard height AC unit. Look at the specs to determine if they are high efficiency or not, the HE ones have an amp draw in the 10 to 11 amp range for the 13,500 buth ones vs, 13.5 to 15 amps for the standard one.

When researching AC units about 2 years ago, I did not find any high efficiency models that were also low profile. I'm guessing this is one of those balance of size vs. current draw physics puzzles, and you just can't have both.

I came to the conclusion that despite my intentions to have a generator or two some day, that 99% of the time I use the AC, the trailer will be plugged into shore power and the current draw isn't going to matter to me as much as having a tall AC on a short trailer.
