ok , so I went to clean this up. and I noticed that it says suburban on it ? im guessing its not original and I should replace it. why would the last owner place this here ?
what is the original piece called and what does it go too ?

the location is: kind of by the door area on the left side.
and the size is about the size of my hand.

That is the air intake and exhaust for the Suburban furnace, and is original. The furnace should be right inside the opening, unless it has been removed for some reason.

ok , its original ! good im happy about that ! now for cleaning this what should I do to re-store it ?

it has corrosion/ pitting on areas
I removed the rust
the shine is gone in areas
should I use a sliver spray paint that blocks rust ?
or have it re-dipped somewhere ?

I believe that a new one might be in order. I think that current Suburban vents even now are able to be used as a replacement. Suburban vents have changed very little over even the 40 years since your furnace has been made.

HOWEVER: if you have a 40 year old furnace in your rig, and are planning to use it, I would really recommend you replace the furnace and it will come with a new outside plate you need. After 40 years both the technology of the furnace and the safety of the original interior guts (they rust out) is questionable. The furnace takes in outside air (bottom hole) and exhausts the spent gasses (top hole) and so no interior air is used or contaminated. But if the furnace rusts out, dangerous CO gasses can come into the trailer interior. They are deadly.

I had a '71 Caravel, which had been in Puyallup all it's life. I brought it to Idaho. I kept getting headaches any time it was cold out and the furnace was in use. To make a long story short, the furnace had rusted out and I was being poisoned by the CO leaking from the furnace. A replacement was in order and solved the problem. Please consider it very carefully.

ok sounds great ! ill buy a new one and look into that soon. its good to know what to keep and polish up (worth money) and what can be replaced. I looked into prices and I see some around 300.00 on ebay which sounds like something I could replace soon. are the old ones worth selling as parts ? or just toss it ? looks kind of rusty so I might toss it. ..... funny that we both got ours in Puyallup ! :] caravels are nice ! I wanted one from the 60's but I settled with a 72 overlander, which im ok with.. just not fond of the blue stripe.

While you are at it go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a Carbon Monoxide detector.

The new furnace will come with a new outside vent/intake that you pictured. They are much cheaper made than the ones 30 years ago, imagine that. I think Vintage trailer supply, Out of doors mart, and inland rv sell cast ones that are like the older ones.
I need to order one myself as the one that came with my new furnace was bent pretty bad new out of the box, it was really cheap and flimsy, as was the furnace compared to the one from the 70's.
Suburban still makes em, so a direct replacement should be pretty simple. Just find the model number.

You might want to get some mud dauber screens for them as well, keeps the bees and bugs from getting in there and building nests.
