Wave 8?

I'm having a hard time deciding on heat options. I have a 1973, 31' and my wife and I live in it year round. We have no source of heat at all. It gets down to 0 with the wind chill. I was thinking of putting a wave 8 in my kitchen. Our bed would be 7 feet away and on the other side opposite wall. If I had it on low at night, how much temperature difference could I expect to feel? Could it actually heat the whole place to above 45 degrees if it was on med or high? If anyone who has one could share there experience, please let me know. Winter is coming....

Catalics are not the way to go for overnight heating as they are dangerous (search on the topic and you will find tons of info). You need to put a furnace in that will draw air for combustion and vent exaust to the outside. A good source for furnaces of the cheap is Palomino (sp) parts. Do a search on cheap appliances and they should pop up. Good luck and think warm thoughts

hi rama777

properly vented catalytic heaters are safe and effective.

the unit mentioned isn't a vented model.

BUT 8k btu just isn't enough heat regardless of heater type...

2 catalytic heaters could keep the unit warm,

but the tanks and water lines will be vunerable...

and the interior moisture produced will be a problem.

get a vented/ducted central heater and an adequate reserve of lp gas...

add a ceramic or oil filled electric space heater for the comfort zone....

toasty!

cheers

When using a catalytic heater, what kind of detecor/alarm do you use? co, co2, o2? I'm confused as to what the precise danger is with using these types of heaters.

most now come with low O2 detector/shut offs...

that's not enough.

the issues are multiple and covered well already in other threads...

search for catalytic heaters or scan the threads in this section.

imo the only cat 2 use regularly and while sleeping is this one...

Platinum CAT vented catalytic heater for RV, Boat, PV,12Vdc propane heaters. A & L Enterprises

but again 2 would be needed for zero degree temps and the pipes may still freeze.

cheers

But what is the actual temperature it gets down to? Wind chill is only a percieved temp and doesn't effect inanimate objects. Inside your trailer it can only get down to the actual temp. A strong wind forcing air through cracks could cool it off faster, but only to the actual temp.

Yeah, but... the heat of the trailer will heat the air surrounding it, wind will move the heated air faster and result in a greater gradient in temp between the camper and the air. With the increased gradient the transfer of heat will increase lowering the temp inside the camper. So while it is correct that the temp inside the trailer cannot drop below that outside, the speed at which the camper looses energy is increased by wind. The greater the rate of heat loss, the more difficulty the heater will have maintaining a comfortable temp inside. At least I think that is how it works.

If you have 30 amp electrical, why not use an oil-filled radiator? They work well and put out a lot of heat......no LP/CO worries either.

Look up the thread "Heaters, heaters, heaters" Your questions will be answered.I'm just starting to put together a hydroponic heater system using the water heater as a source,I've got 2 kawasaki radiators and am only needing a recirc pump-trying to decide on 12 or 120V.
So back to your question-You got a budget? The solar collector is cheap and will keep you warm when the sun is shining. At nite a oil filled unit would be a must-they work well.I have an olympian 8100- earlier version of wave 8. It really puts out heat but eats oxygen. And I can not say enough good things about my Dickinson yacht heater.
good luck

So even with some of the ceiling vents open and some or all the windows cracked an inch, it still would be unsafe to sleep with one on?

No.

(Of course, someone will disagree with me.)

You won't run out of O2 with the vent open.
It "shouldn't" give of CO, unless you're in a very low O2 environment. (which you won't be, because you're leaving a vent open).

But yes, you could, theoretically, seal yourself in an air-tight container, turn on a cat heater, and kill yourself.

always have a CO detector in the presence of any gas appliance.
