Thermostat for Armstrong A/C
Does anyone know if a thermostat could be installed on an air conditioner which hand not been assembled with one? I own a 1976 Armstrong unit with three fan speeds. In order to keep my trailer at a comfortable temperature, I have to be the human thermostat. Too hot? Jump up and switch it up a speed. Cold? Get up and, well you get the idea.

Your A/C should have another knob for the thermostat control. All the fan speed does is change air flow speed. A picture of your controls would be helpful
I have two Armstrongs and both have thermostats. It is necessary to keep the compressor from freezing up.

There should be one. If not, it was probably removed by a former owner, and can be added again. There are universal replacement parts available that should work.

Now of course I've got the separate wall thermostat for my Suburban furnace, but it has no cool switch. It is very odd, all my a/c really is a window unit with the output duct running down instead of straight, and I have never seen a window unit without a thermostat. I am at a loss why they designed it that way. The compressor never cycles. There certainly isn't a panel switch, maybe they figured with all the heat loss through windows full speed would be all anyone would use.

I removed the inside cover and found a schematic that implied wiring to a thermostat. It also had three wires that had been cut and taped off.

There should be a separate thermostat located somewhere in the living room area that controls the A/C compressor. Fan must still be turned off manually but the compressor and heat strip will come on and off based on that thermostat. Look for a patched hole somewhere on your roadside living room area close to the kitchen.
