Testing an Armstrong AC for signs of life

All--

I recieved a few comments that I should keep the mighty Armstrong Sea Breeze unit. So I'm doing a rough check of the system.

When I trun on the switch to any of the settings, the fan spins right up and blow a lot of air, but the compress does not turn on. After looking at the wiring schematic cleverly pasted on the interior of the AC, it looks like I should get 24 VAC across the open thermostat with the unit on. Right now I get zero volts across the thermostat

Does anyone know where the 24 VAC transformer is on the AC?

I'm pretty sure that the transformer was located inside a metal box that was around 10"x3"x5'. You would have to remove the inside cover to the unit. It would be located on the curbside around the middle of the unit. It had a large romex cable running into the box as well as all the wires from the remote thermostat.

Kokopat and Richard--

thanks for the pointer I'll go digging tomorrow and see if the transformer has 24V at the terminals. I'm going to be actually be a bit annoyed if the Armstrong works because I've been eyeing a new one for a while now.
