Single 15,000 btu verses dual A/c in FC 25'

All you Airstreamers with 25' FC please help me out. We live in a warm climate and tend to head south in our travels. Does a single unit keep your Airstream comfortable in the summer?

This isn't a direct answer to your question. We opted for the dual AC in our 25'. The dual cools it off quickly, then we turn one unit off. In the unlikely event that one unit fails, we have another up there.

What he said, plus, you also get 50 amp service, so you won't have to scrimp on power needs.

50 amp is 12,000w. while 30 amp is 3600w.

Better to have more and not need it than to need it and don't have it.

My single ac freezes me out and I use the fantastic fan more than the ac, both in the south and in the southwest.... I have never once wished I had a second. However, I am not as heat sensitive as most humans appear to be. Depends on your needs. Also if ya plan on dry camping a lot like me, you will not be able to use your ac as much anyways. Especially two of em.

So it depends on your needs. Some wouldn't give up the 2nd ac and I would give up the second fan.

It will barely keep up.
I would get the dual if you regularly travel south even in the summer.

I'll give you our recent experience. We have a 25 ft with a single AC and recently traveled between CA and OR for the eclipse. When we camped on I-5 with the temps ~100F, the 15K AC could not cool us off until sundown. This due to heat soak from traveling without the AC running.

Last weekend, we were camped in Marin County, just north of SF, with temps ~102F. We started the AC in the morning to prevent heat soak but still,
by the late afternoon, the dinette was ~90F and we were not happy campers.

Some are less sensitive and have no problem with that. But we'd prefer to keep the AS below 80F if it's 100F out and the AC has been running all day.

BTW, we just bought a 27 FB with two AC's. Picking it up tomorrow.

I can't imagine that the new Airstreams are that much less insulated than my 1992 26 foot Land Yacht (Squarestream). We have camped in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, et c in temps as high as 110 degrees. Week before last here in central Texas we had two 106 degree days. I have never run the fan of my 13500 BTU Dometic above the low setting or set the temp below the mid-point; keeps it mid 70's easily. My opinion...save the expense and buy something you really need.

I think it may have a lot to do with how you were raised, cause I never had ac as a kid so now it feels real cold to me when it's on, even on hot days in summer. I always feel like I'm in a hotel when I have the ac on cause that's what I remember about hotels when I was a kid.... They were huge and they had freezin air.

My house here in Virginia has a window AC in the bedroom but we hardly ever run it.

You sure about this? I have a weather station with indoor and outdoor temps and there's no way our 2017 will stay that cool. Here's a picture I took last Fri showing 103F out and 88 in. We ran the AC from early morning to fight off the heat but by 3 PM our AS could only manage a 15 degree delta. We were fully exposed in the sun so no shade for us.

Dasams sometimes there are other factors like if ya have awnings deployed or if you're in the sun, whether ya leave the curtains and skylight open, humidity level and also how clean the intake vents are. I have experienced both jonmdons scenario and yours. I was able to keep it at 75 (which is as low as I set it) in the California desert at 105 but in Kansas at 115 it would only go to 80 or so. That was plenty fine for me though.

Agreed. We have the awning package and all three were deployed, we were fully exposed to the sun, no clouds, it was a dry heat, vents were clean, there was no wind and our single AC was rated at 15K BTU's. That's my experience.

Ac

I have a 28' with a single AC unit. It is the only complaint that I have with my trailer. It is my experience that on unit simply cannot keep up with any kind of warm weather. If I had it to do over again, I would DEFINITELY have two AC units. I am told that would require 50 amp service, but I would still want two units. I feel that it is worth it. I hope that this helps. Hi Mike: We traded our 25 RB with a single AC for a 27FB with two AC's and we're vary happy with the upgrade.

We love our 50 amp service. It's actually 50 amps @ 240V at the pedestal and 100 amp at 120V in the trailer. So no more worries about popping the breaker (we have two 50 amp breakers) because we ran the micro when the AC and the water heater were on.

And if we're camped with only a 30 amp pedestal, then we only run one of the AC's.

Painting the roof white helps a lot and so do awnings. I camp to be outside. If it is too hot to go outside, what is the point of camping? We travel to stay where the temperatures are mild. In the winter go south, in the summer go north or to the mountains. If you are in temps above 90 in bare sun with no shades over the windows, no awnings, and an aluminum roof you will need two AC units. If it gets over 95 my house AC looses ground and it is a 4 ton on a 2200 sq ft house. Shade is your best friend.

Regardless of what A/C you have, the assembly of the sealing of the Plenum and the foam segregation seals under the shroud leave A LOT to be desired and result in "short circuiting" the hot (inside the roof unit) and the cold (inside the plenum). I re-worked the foam taping and punched holes in the sheet metal between the intake and exhaust areas under the shroud; aluminum taped the seams and punched holes in the plenum; and reworked the foam seals between the intake and output ports in the inside shroud. Made a huge difference in the performance of a single 13.5 BTU in my 30' Classic. I do have full awnings, and that makes a big difference too, but I have no problem maintaining a 20 - 25* differential between ambient and inside temps....after overcoming a long heat soak of driving all day.

By the way 50 amp Service is not 12000w it is 6000w. Here is the formula P=VI V in this case is 120 not 240. I is 50 amp. There is no 240 volt service in an Airstream there are two 120 volt services in parallel to each other that supplies 50 amps. Hope this helps clear things up a bit. Also 2 ac units are much better than 1 especially in the summer in the South.

That is not correct, there are 2 legs each carrying 50 amps at 120V so i=100 and power delivery is indeed 12k watts.
