Replacement Fan Motor for Roof Exhaust Fan

Hi all. My roof exhaust fan motor seems to have stopped working in my 74 31" Sovereign. I am looking for a replacement motor as I can't afford to put in a Fantastic right now as I would like to. Anyone have a source for it?

Thanks, Richard

Almost always sunny here unless there is a hurricane bearing down on you. And then it's time to hook up the burb and roll. So far I've been very lucky.

Inland RV lists a ceiling vent fan motor on their website sale page. See Ceiling Vent Fan.

I have purchased a number of parts for both my Overlander and Minuet from them and all have been of the best quality and fit with few if any headaches.

If you're lucky, you can find someone who is installing a fantastic fan. I was able to get a motor for the cost of shipping.

We got new motors for them from Inland RV. They run about $57, plus shipping of course. We still have one left to install, so I can get the model/part # off our new one for you if you want to do a search for someone local who might have them. That way you won't have to pay shipping. Someone else must stock them. Inland has to get their supply from someone (manufacturer). I will post a photo and detailed model number off it later today. Now if you need a new fan blade and plastic shroud for around it, that's a AS specific part and I know that Inland has those too. We bought some of the also, as we were adding a fan where there wasn't one. The blade runs approx. $9, and the shroud $14 if I recall. So for well under $100, even if you added shipping costs you could have a whole new setup, without having to modify for a fantastic fan.

Everything else is fine just need motor. Motor still works if I pull on wires but then goes off again. I am afraid it might catch fire or something. 35years old and all.

Sounds like the flexing over the years has broken the copper wire inside the insulation. How good are you with a soldering iron? Remove the motor, take it apart, replace the wires & you should get away dirt cheap.

I would take the old motor apart and repair the broken wire, clean the bearings (most likely sleeve) and motor shafts. Lube the bearings with a light oil. Mark the motor when you open it so you put it back together the same way it came apart.

Be careful with the fan blade. It can break easily (don't ask), but replacement blades are still available.

Yes I am sure that the plastic is quite brittle. Not unlike the peanut brittle. Just like most of the other plastic in the Sovereign.

I also wanted the fantastic-fan, as they looked like they could move some air.
But they don't give them away free anymore.
So after you repair your wiring, maybe make up a set of extra large blades.
With these on, I can now feel a breeze from an open window.

Heres the parts needed

Find center, mark it well, and scribe radius.
About 10" maximum

Lay out blades
I made 15

Cut outside.
And sand edges now, before you cut blades

First bends made to blades.
It would work here, but I wanted more

My version of Tornado-Fan

Most important...the center hub.
Trick here is to place bolt in drill press chuck, and the drill in a vise below.
That way it will find true center.
(poor man's lathe)

Old 6" vs new 10"
What a change!
Now it really moves some air...and looks Airstreamy...not SOB plastic

If you are using the original shroud with it then a 10" blade will be too big. Maybe that's why yours didn't move much air, if you didn't have the shroud on it. I think it's designed to work best with the shroud.

There's also a chance the brushes are worn out or hung.
Mine suffers from armature hang. The darn thing works great on the bench, mounted verticle it drags, probably needs a spacer adjustment. I believe Terry went thru the same issue with his AC unit on his fulltimer thread.

I tend to use the other roof fan...15,000 BTU....

This Shroud:

Here's a pic of the old one we replaced. It mounts up in the opening before you permanently attach the motor and blade.

klattu,

Is your custom fan blade any noisier than the original smaller blade?

By the way, that was an ingenious idea!

It does make a different sound.
I can tell it spins slower.
Makes a lower pitched sound, and is more as a house fan sound.

My original 6", I never had a shroud

The 15 blade 10"

And this is a 9 blade 10"...i think this one flows more air

Notice on the 6" fan, I do have the screens, just not installed at time of blade change.
I wanted to replace the gasket while I'm doing all this.

Yes, it moves much more air.
If the window is opened about 5", there is a breeze coming thru.

No, there are no shrouds, but now they are not needed.

And I added to check for corrosion between the S/S bolt and aluminum blades every 20 years.

Klattu,

The only issue I can think of that you might affect you down the road is the larger fan blades probably draw more current which will shorten the life of the fan motor.

Then again the larger amount of cooling air passing the motor might keep it cooler so it could last longer.......

Keep us posted on how they hold up over time.

Brad

I have a NOS replacement fan motor

Hi.
I have one of these. The Airstream part number is 510228-100. It is still in the box. It was made by DCM. Let me know if you'd like it. I'll sell it for $50.00 shipped to your door.
