Removing A/C 69 GT

Hi All

I would like to remove the air-conditioning unit from my 69 globe trotter.
I have drilled out the pop rivets that hold the internal unit in place. This is attached to the external unit by two copper pipes.

What is in these pipes?
Do they disconnect or do I have to cut them?

I was also led to believe that there was a normal skylight/vent aperture under the A/C unit however there is only a small hole for the fan spindle and a larger 2" hole for the aforementioned pipes.

I don't want to cut the pipes until I know what is in them

They are the lines between the compressor and the evaporator on the inside and then back to the condenser on the outside. If your system works, cutting them will release any refrigerant left in the system. If the system is original and hasn't cooled in years, then it has probably all leaked out years ago.

I think i will get an A/C tech in to purge the system before I remove it. I don't want to release anything bad into the atmosphere.

No, you get to cut that 14" square hole. Having to do that is part of the reason I restored my original Bay Breeze air conditioner.

It still works great, and I feel I made the right choice to get it working again.

By the way, ALL licensed, certified, air-conditioning technicians are required by law to capture the refrigerant in an air conditioner instead of releasing it to the atmosphere. That being said, a lot of them around here don't - I have personally witnessed it.

So if you go to the trouble of hiring someone to empty the system, make sure they do it the legal way.

After that, you can dig down in the pile of putty around the copper pipes & find the unions where the top & bottom units are screwed together. I don't think you will need to cut anything.
