It come out in two pieces. From the inside, you will have to remove the defuser from the ceiling by remove a few rivets, exposing the Evaporator, fan blade and selector switch so they can all be removed. I can remember if the two freon tube connection points are inside or outside, but regardless they will need to come apart.
From the outside you can remove the remaining unit after removing a few rivets and lifting the compressor, fan motor and condenser and electrical connections.
Question becomes, do you want to remove or rebuild? If you're just rebuilding, there's no need to remove the inside (unless the evaporator has a hole, which would be shown after a drawdown test). You can replace the fan motor, compressor, etc.. from the outside as part of a rebuild.
