OK, so how do you open the A/C shroud?

That model of Armstrong AC was used from 1976 to 1979.

Thyat makes your AC 31 years old (young), as it was and is a good AC.

If you ran the AC using an inadequate extension cord, you may have ruined the compressor.

I have tracked the problem to the fan motor. I would just try to replace it, but I can't get the fan blade or blower off the shaft. I have loosened the set screws but apparently 30 years makes them stubborn. Any suggestions? I can't find a way to get leverage on either since there are coils at both ends. Another thing that concerns me is that before it quit, the compressor was cycling on and off every 5 minutes or so. Is that normal?
If we have to get a new one, what is the best one to look for?

Lubing the fan motor, will extend it's life for many more months of service.

No.

There is a screen in the way, that can be removed, but you have to remove the shroud first.

I have a 1972 27 ft international with the original Armstrong ac TR 21-12.

Recently the fan on roof that cools fins (I believe it is the condenser fan) hums and turns slowly but will not start. This seems to happen most often on low. I tried to lube fan but not sure where to lube. When the unit is off and I try to spin the fan it is somewhat stiff. Is there a replacement for this fan motor? Does it sound like a fan motor or something else?

Remove the shroud.

You should then be able to lube the condenser motor.

Just got done being motor very little change. Motor still spins hard and sometimes needs help starting.

Is there a current. Part number of motor from some place like grange

How about part number for capacitor as one ac repair guy said it might be a capacitor

Still hoping someone can provide me with a replacement condenser fan motor I could find somewhere like granger. And a start capacitor.

If the motor spins hard, then that's the problem, not a condenser.

A bad condenser will not make the shaft turn hard.

Did you lube both ends of the shaft?

You can, if you wish, disassemble the motor, clean up the bearing sleeves, clean up the armature shaft, lube it again, and then reassemble. The shaft should now turn freely.

W. W. Grainger does have a replacement motor, but I do not have the part number.
