New Noise and heater shutting down periodically

Atwood Hydro Flame 8500-IV Series. Have been full timing in CO at 8000 ft for 4 years with no furnace problems. Returned from Christmas travel to find less than normal temp. inside. Upon inspecting thermostat, read 65 and on, though furnace not kicking on. Turned of power, toggled 'off 'switch at furnace. Power up and furnace worked fine. 2 days later, felt temp dropping on inside, heater not kicking on (though had been working for hours prior). Just on/off cycling of the thermostat fixed this time.

Also, I hear a new subtle grinding noise when the blower is on. When it kicks of, I hear a intermittent 'rub' with the final revolutions of the blower.

Are these problems connected? Is the furnace over-heating?

Thank you for you time and advice,
Todd

Sounds like the heater fan has lived a complete life and may warrant replacement.

If the fan is rubbing there may be a limit circuit in the control board that forces a shutdown. Only a question the the maker will answer that.

Had same problem with furnace not coming on in our 2010 30' Classic. Covered under extended 5 year warranty - dealer replaced some component on circuit board - runs OK now. Problem manifested itself by making a clicking noise in the furnace, but blower and flame would not come on. Thermostat on wall was OK.

Full timing, 8000 ft, CO climate means you have lots and lots and lots of hours on that furnace. They really are not designed for that kind of use. So, I would suspect that the furnace blower/motor/bearings are worn or tired. Also the control systems, such as the sail switch, over limit switch and so on get grumpy with lots of use.

Anything could be repaired, but you may want to consider a new furnace.

Just my opinion and thoughts of course.

As a fulltimer I'd consider anything past 1000 days of use to be free. This may seem short, but fulltime use in a few years is more than most will use in ten years plus of vacationing.

If the fan is gone, the plenum can't be far behind. You really don't want to mess with a worn out furnace.
You do have a monoxide detector?

Best choice for replacement furnace?

Thank you all for your kind replies. If I were to replace the entire furnace... best choice today? Replace with similar Atwood Hydro Flame?

Can I replace it on my own? Safely? Moderate handy-man skills... Plenty of youtube videos online showing process.

I am finding overall that Airstream maintenance, is most often forced to be 'do it yourself.'

I would replace it with a similar unit, just much easier to install when you don't have to re engineer the holes etc. Since your rig is not that old, probably the new Atwood's are the same as the one you have. The life cycle design of RV furnaces is pretty long, that is the same unit is generally made for years.

If you have moderate handy man skills, you should be able to do it yourself. You will have to shut the gas off for a while of course.
