New Furnace Burnt Paint Smell

So how long does it take for the burnt paint smell to go away? I installed a new furnace and let it run for about an hour and the burnt paint smell is still there. It set off the fire alarm for the first several minutes.

Just used the furnace in ours for the first time. It wasn't until the second night that I didn't notice the smell.....

Paint and some oil on parts I think. Doesn't last long.

With windows open you won't be recirculating the fouled air... just a thought...

It took my last one a while. I just opened the doors and windows and let it cycle for a few hours while I did other stuff. After that it was fine.

It is starting to get better. I have been through about half a 20lb bottle so far.

What flavor propane are you burning? Is the prevailing wind pushing the heater exhaust back to you?

No exhaust problems. I have a fan blowing fresh air into the trailer on the opposite from the heater vent. I just put on mud dauber screen over the exit and exhaust. Those things contributed to my old furnace's demise.

And yet, IIRC (it's been two heating seasons since I put the new one in) there was a very specific warning against those screens in the manual.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't, I guess...

The screens are dome shaped and don't restrict the flow. I am an Aerospace engineer and the burner and flu being full of dirt is much worse than any restriction from the screen. A flat screen might restrict the flow to some extent. I think Suburban even makes a screen.

While not an aerospace engineer, I'd definitely have to say that a mud dauber nest will restrict airflow more than one of the screens designed to keep them out... Unless, of course, it builds its nest ON the screen, then I guess it's cumulative.

Did the smell ever go away?

I have not had it on lately. There is always some sort of smell. Replacing the ducts would help as well.

I still have to dig into mine and find out why it doesn't light. We used a little electric portable all last winter. It got us by, but was by no means toasty in there...
