Need Some AC Advice (1967 Overlander)

I dug into my non-functioning AC today and found a mess.

Conditions found:

Compressor electric lines chewed in half
Blower motor corroded into two halves essentially.
Unit filled with leaves, twigs etc.

I cleaned up the unit best I could and removed the blower motor, capped off the blower motor leads and reconnected the compressor electrical lines. Problem is when I move the thermostat to call for cooling, all I get is a loud buzz coming from the AC control box.

Any ideas on what is going on? Best I can tell the compressor is not turning. Also, my schematic is toast...anybody out there have a copy?

Hey Tim,

Nice to see some more Carolinians on board. We're located in Rock Hill, and Pickens.

My guess would be that your AC is not new and has given it's all. Between age, lack of maintenance, and use, it may be time to consider replacing I would think.

Do you know the make and model?

Does it turn by hand? If so,I would change at the capaseter,they are cheep and eazy to change.

I agree with Bibbs.

Change the AC starter Capacitor. Should be available through an electrical supply house.

You could also try McMaster Carr

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I bought my Overlander last year up in Kentucky and have been going through each system since. The maintenance history on this camper is a little sketchy but the rooftop unit is a mess. My plan is to rebuild it because I don't want to cut a hole in my shell for a new one...plus I like a good mechanical puzzle.

I have the schematic sorted out and parts for the blower in hand. The compressor capacitor is still on order. I'll let you know how everything works out.

New unit should mount in the same hole, using the same wiring and drain tube. IIRC the new units are the Dometic Penguin.

67's did not have a 14 x 14 hole.

Also the drain line was installed after production, and at the time the AC was installed.

Drain lines were not a standard "built in" until the 69 model trailers.

Also the 14" x 14" hole was not cut until the 1970 models.

The old TAC-110 models had a small hole for the fan shaft and an oval hole about 2 x 4 inches for the wiring and the 2 refrigerant lines.

Confusing I know, but that's the way Airstream did it.
