On my regulator there is a glass cap between the tanks that sticks up. It probably has a rubber cover on top that doesn't go down all the way. There is a green band around the base of this cap when there is plenty of Propane feeding through the regulator. In cold weather it's a good idea to check it OFTEN. The green turns to red when the tank is getting ready to stop flowing due to low pressure. Before you do anything else to diagnose any propane appliance problem, you'll want to check this...

Glad you got it fixed and saved a bundle. Paula Ford
Thanks a bunch, Paula.

I have the same exact glass cap you have. Thankfully, it's green on one tank right now. It seems I have a replacement Y-Valve with a manual switch and this little spyglass-gauge-a-thingamajig. *now I know how it works*

I shall now visit my propane dealer, (which btw sells by weight, not by fixed price) refill Main Tank #1 and get a 20-pound reserve tank per your advice.

This past summer, I bought a little device that replaces that cap, and at the other end of a longish wire, has a little tiny box that you screw to the wall inside your TT, and when the LED in it starts blinking, the changeover happened.

I love it! No more checking no more guesswork. When it changes over, I take the empty one in within a day or two, and voilą, done!
