Jackson Center Air Cond Replacement Experience?

I am considering replacing the 11000btu air conditioner on my 02 Safari 25. I would like to upgrade to a 13500 btu or 15000 btu unit. Does anyone have experience with Jackson Center doing non-warraty Air conditioner replacement? What was the price and for which size unit? Thanks for any info.

No experience Bud other than having them do some warranty work on my Safari back in 2001. I saw them replacing two units on a motor home next to me. You can give them a call for a price. At least you know they will do it right.

Bud,
You're probably close enough to Out Of Doors Mart in Colfax, NC, to have them do it for you. Terry and Tim replaced my 13,500 with a 15,000. It really made a difference in the "cool" factor. Cost under $2,000 for mine.

The best part of the story is that I was pulling solo back from Dallas, TX, where I almost melted in the heat with the old unit running so badly it popped breakers. I pulled in without an appointment, explained my dilemma, and they squeezed me into the schedule so I could get home yet that night.

Thank you for the information. From where I live, Jackson Center is actually 100 miles closer than Out Of Doors Mart. My Safari was originally sold by ODM. I think a13500 btu unit should be good for a 25 footer.... But not positive. I plan to call JC and discuss and get an estimate and discuss sizing.

Mine Out 2

My AC is tripping breakers left and right. I am sitting in a park in Michigan. I have priced the 15000 BTU units and you can buy one for around $1000.00 I hope that ODM didn't charge a grand for install. Ouch!!! If that is the case then I will figure out how to do it myself on the road. I am out until November. Once you get the AC on the roof, it is about a 30 minute install. I am calling JC in the am for an estimate. May have to run back down for the install. Maybe they can squeeze me in before July 4th. Have to be in Chicago by the 6th.

I just bought a Dometic BriskAir from Outdoors Mart for $908 which included shipping which was $120. This was 15k Btu with the heater kit and drain kit. Another secret is you can save $70 by using your old air distribution box assuming you get the same series unit. I believe most of the air boxes on the newer units are interchangable. So I would think you could get a new unit installed for $1000. My Briskair is dirt simple with no electronic junk like comfort control etc. Less stuff to go wrong. It is just two coils a compressor, thermostat and fan. No control boards that I could see. It looked like the Dometics that have been produced for the last 40 yrs or so. If you are going to the expense of replacing what you have then go with a 15k BTU of whatever brand you choose.

Will the 15000 btu unit run on 30 amp service or will I need 50 amp if I go with the 15000 unit?

Thanks for all the good information.

Ditto on that. The 15k units run fine on a 20A circuit. They probably draw no more than an older 13.5k unit.

I had Jackson Center install a airconditioner in my 25' Excella 5 years ago. It is a fairly small unit, not sure if 11500 or 13500 and it cost about $1200 or $1300 installed. I was there for something else and then had this done. It was a unit they keep in stock. They did a good job. It does not leak or drip and all of the water goes down the drain line like it is supposed to. It cost a bit more that the advertises price at camping world, but Wayne, the Airstream tech working on it, said we hook up the drain line like it is supposed to be and sometimes they do not.
A email to Chris Burch at Airstream will probably get a prompt response and quote. Go to service on the JC website and you can contact a SR directly.

Last time I looked on my 2004 15K Dometic specs, I think it needed 18 amps. I'm not sure if that was the high end for start up or whether that's the normal draw. I do know this in regards to electrical needs with my trailer. Microwave oven on, electric water heater on, fridge on, and air conditioner on, pretty much blows a lot of campground 30 amp breakers.

I live in Coastal Virginia about 12 miles north of the NC state line. I have the 15,000 unit and it keeps my trailer nice and comfortable - of course choosing a shady space to park between June and September helps that along, too. The smaller unit is probably fine if most of your travel is in the hills, or farther north - but for the south "sweatpit" you need the biggun!

And yes mine runs fine on 30 amps.

Go with the 15K unit and you won't be sorry. 13.5K on a really hot day doesn't do the trick in my estimation. ODM will do you a great job as I'm sure Jackson Center will as well. Good luck.

Get a quote from each and figure your gas costs into the equation and go with the cheaper one. It should not take them more than an hour to do the job.
