It is official. I killed my first appliance. After concurring with Doug at AS of Spokane my unit is dead. When the compressor tries to start the voltage drops to 98 and the Amps climb to 28. At least that what I could measure. Inside a funny warm electronic smell. That confirmed it.

I stop back by Tuesday to have the unit replaced/upgraded. I had him order a 15,000 BTU unit instated of 13,500. It comes with the hard start kit. The bed room was taking a long time to cool down.
The cost around $1400 for the unit plus install. Better than replacing the house unit!

I guess nothing lasts forever. Have you considered the low profile 15k units? I see them for much less than 1400.00 all day long. Just wondering...

Agree with Uwe, $1400 seems high.

It's really not that much work. I just ordered a Carrier low-profile 15K BTU + heat strip for $750 delivered, and the work is DIY-friendly, especially if you have a couple of friends. But even if you have an installer do it, I can't imagine them charging another $700 for the install-- at $100/hour, that's 7 hours, and I don't believe a pro would take 7 hours to do this job...

Are you in your 3rd year of warranty? If so, the replacement of your roof air is covered by Dometic's 3 year warranty..............but only the parts. Also, Dometic will only replace exactly what you have...as in 13.5K.

But If I were doing the job, I would get your replacement unit from Dometic and take it in trade for the 15K that you want ....plus a few bucks!

IIRC, a new 13.5K heat pump Penguin has an MSRP of around $900, and the 15K is just a bit more......maybe $1050 plus freight. Are you replacing the lower unit as well, or just the topper?

Also, usually takes me between 1-1.5 hrs to do a 'normal' roof air replacement....but as you know.........Airstreams are anything but 'normal! I would go with 2-2.5 for the job, considering they have to deal with the drain pan. Plus, if I were doing it, I would remove the drain pan completely and go with Dometic's auxiliary drip kit, which gives you little cups to catch the condensate, a drain hose arrangement and a second gasket for the unit. It would work fine on your Classic's roof, which is a little bit wider and flatter than the rest of the A/S line. Don't know why A/S doesn't do this to begin with, as almost all of the high end MoHo OEMs use the drip kit!

I am past my two years on my trailer. are you telling me my AC has a three year warranty? Wooo hooo I am upgrading to the 15K unit.

It should have said $1400 installed. including a new pan three day freight from Jackson Center.
I have riden Ruby from Missoula to La Grande and done a few rides around La Grande. She will be coming hopefully with me to Helena?
I have put 1500 miles on her so far.

The replacement unit is around $900, four hours of labor at $70/hour and a new pan for about $100 plus freight for the pan. A little less than $1400. If I had my own place I would do it my self. I need it done quick. It is hot and they can do it on my way back to La Grande.

I am in my third year of ownership. I am getting the 15K unit. My understanding the whole unit is getting replaced.

I kinda think that $ 1400.00 installed, with express freight and a pan is somewhat reasonable. Put in perspective, Thanks.

Michelle, you know you have to realign the dilithium crystals to the primary power couplings through the antimatter inducer, or else the ODM conduits will suffer a cascade failure, resulting in the artificial gravity plating to the phase coils inverting.

I have only put 1500 miles on it and that was in about a month. We were separated for a couple of months. It had 15222 on it when I bought it. It still looks brand new. She is three years old.

I revived it with a brain transplant. THat's great bones!
It turns out I already had a 15,000 BTU unit. I still have the old style air box on the bottom. Doug completed the whole thing in a couple of hours. I was fortunate the weather was cool at night and i could sleep. It was over 100 here yesterday. I was happy to have the new unit.
