Interior Furnace Vent Needed For '61 Bambi

I am looking for a replacement for the interior front metal furnace vent for my 1961 Bambi.

The furnace is long gone and the previous owner had covered the opening with mismatched wood. Any ideas where I can get something that will look age and size correct? Anyone out there who has replaced their furnace and has a spare front?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi Brad: I'll try to get a photo of the "gap" later this week. My renovation is coming along pretty well. Woodworking and countertop are done but the painting is going slowly. I have developed a small leak coming from the old vent screw hole on the top of the trailer. The last huge rain brought it on. I re-sealed the new vent edges but it only slowed the leak it must be from around the old black seal even though I don't see any cracks . Do you recommend Vulkum? (SP) as a sealer around the original vent base as my next option?

Good morning Nancy ~

I'm sorry to hear of your leak and that last bit of rain was a doosey. I will always recommend Vulkem as its ability to remain flexible lasts like the Energizer Bunny.

I saw on another thread tht you didn't know how to post pix. If you need help, shoot me a PM.

Picture posted in my "Photos" file

I finally got a few shots of the start of the interior renovation into my "photos" file on this site. One of them clearly shows the opening in the cabinet door where the furnace grill would go.

Perhaps someone has an idea here.

I would make one using the same metal screening as is used on my magazine rack and kitchen racks if I could find that pattern.

Hello fellow 1961 Bambi owner!

Our heater was also removed before we purchased our Bambi. The past owner also fabricated a door for the opening. His/Her attempt wasn't bad. At first glance it is passable, but we know it's there. We once saw a vent cover listed on eBay about a year ago. We meant to "watch" it and bid but completely forgot about it and missed our chance to bid.

Hopefully we'll both be able to find one.

Good luck with your restoration!

Hi Puggzilla ~

Locally, I found a similar patterned metal called Union Jack at the Ace Hardware on Broadway just east of Priest in Tempe. They had other patterns too. You could also try Capitol Metals on S. 52nd Street. They're a showroom and warehouse of all things metal.

Let me know if I can help.

Still no luck. I have checked with Ace and Capital Metals and the don't carry my pattern. It is called ornamental chain link. I found the actual graphic scale pattern from a company on the east coast. Capital deals with them but they will only manufacture and ship in full orders starting at $2,300.00. A bit much for my pocketbook. So, the hunt continues. I am now painted and am getting ready to try and remove the carpet to check out the tile underneath. Of course, a dry weekend would help. And the renovation continues.
