If you were going to install a new low profile AC...
which one would you use? I'm looking at 13,500 BTU for our '66 Safari project. Wall thermostat would be nice. Would you bother with the heat strip? Will not be used in real cold much at all. Any ideas & past experiences good or bad with different manufactures would be appreciated before I buy something.

Not specific to which unit ot get, but I would get the heat strip without question. When camped with hookups it's a whole lot better using their electricity than my propane. And it's handy to just take the morning chill off.

I don't believe there are any low profile units available except from Dometic at this point.

My furnace makes about a third the noise of running the rooftop unit. Propane is pretty inexpensive if I'm trying to sleep. But the heatstrip is still worth it for giving you more options.

We have the Dometic Penguin reverse-cycle A/C. It works as advertised, using the wall thermostat, but it was a lot more expensive than a heat strip would have been. That said, can anyone suggest an advantage of the "reverse-cycle" vs the heat strip? I've had both, and both are equally great for taking the morning chill off - but, since the compressor has to run, the reverse-cycle is definitely noisier.

Between the two, a heat pump is better if YOU are paying for electricity and the outside air temp isn't too low, a resistive heater works fine if someone else is footing the electric bill.

Carrier discontinued making rv air last year. But, here's a bargain if you don't mind repainting the shroud:
NEW RV Air Conditioner Carrier AirV 13,500 LOW PROFILE | eBay
Carrier had the set up for the drain line already built into the unit. A Google search will turn up a few more places that seem to still have a few left in stock.

Interesting!!! I would have thought that the heat pump would be roughly equal to the resistive heater with respect to power consumption. Live and Learn.
