House Air conditioner, anybody do this??

My 27' A/S AC unit just went south, as in TU.
It's a 1970, so I have been looking at new ones, seeing them for between $1200-1800.
To me this is insanity!

Been looking at the new home units that sit on the floor and have a small flexible tube vent out of a window.
They cost about $350 for a top model. living in the great NW, I only use AC when I go south.
I always camp full service, so I don't care about 12v conversion.
I want to patch the huge roof hole and buy a small floor model.

Anybody ever done this???

Hi, $1200.00 to $1800.00 seems like a lot of money, but maybe not to much considering it lasted forty years. [if original] I use a portable air conditioner in my house; I don't know how long it will last. They do take up a lot of space though.

There was a good discussion about this type of AC not long ago here on the forums. Seems that most folks said the units were loud and not very efficient, and take up too much floor space.

Ours is running...and cooling even though it gets up to 103-4 each afternoon...and I sit there and wonder when it's ever going to go 'out'...we otherwise have a peak 03 air unit that we will run while we are gone out working. There would not be enough room in here to run a floor unit and there ain't nothin worse than looking down the center of an over congested Airstream. So I figure I will keep an eye on ours and hope it won't go out at the wrong time. The city code man came in here yesterday and got a little tour. We are moving again to a shadier spot down the street and he was delighted to visit as he was an Rv'er himself and offered his advice about reese hitches and 'not to back up with them hooked up!' Anyway to make a long story short-let's just hope we make it thru the rest of this summer. I will take winter on anytime.

keep in mind that you'll need a lot of btu's to cool that trailer!

Same thing happened with my A/C, compressor just up and quit just before the unusually warm weather hit. I bought a portable AC from Home Depot, $400 for a 10,000..BTU is it? Supposed to cool 410 sq ft or something like that. It's not too loud, I have it in the bathroom (bathroom stays warm) and it's in the doorway to the bedroom..bedroom stays cold...kitchen/living area stays lukewarm. It's better than nothing but I wouldnt suggest buying one, I'm brining mine back as soon as the weather cools. But maybe if you put it in the main area it would be fine. But for $400 I expect it to at least cool a trailer!! Anyhow, I store it in the closet and leave the hose in place (I have cats so it's duct taped like crazy so they cant escape through the hole that the hose goes through). They are pretty heavy and tall...at least the one I got is.
