Hot Water Heater and Furnace Q's

I have a 69 Sovereign that I am trying to get all figured out.

My first question is once the pilot is lit and the flame is burning in my hot water heater, how long does it take to get hot water? Does the water heat on demand, once it is gone does the hot water tank refill automatically and then the heater kicks back on?

Next question, how do I light my furnace? When I open the cap to light it with a match, which sequence of buttons do I push or pull? It is the original Suburban furnace, it has two black push pull levers on either side of the cap and a small button with a chrome ring around below the push pull on the left.

Please give me as much knowledge as you can on these matters.

Thanks for the time.

My water heaters always provided hot water within about 15-20minutes from cold. The pilot flame stays lit as long as the heater is turned on, ideally. Once the water temp drops below a preset level, the main burner will come on again to heat teh water back up. City water pressure or your water pump will refill the water heater's tank automatically. This is providing that all related systems are in good working order.

Can't help you much with the furnace, but my 71 furnace had instructions printed on teh grey cover. Do a search for furnace in this forum, and you should find what you're looking for.
