Great Thermostat Fix

My trailer came up from the south and had never encountered a winter before. The old thermostat had no off switch for the furnace and would turn the furnace on with temps under 50 even if we did not want it on.
I replaced the thermostat with a Hunter model #42999, available at Lowes for $24.99. This is a non-programmable digital thermostat which will operate both AC and furnace. The key is that all of its electronics are operated off of the batteries and not the 12V system. So even though this thermostat is for residential 24vac residential HVAC systems, we can use it on our 12 volt systems.

If you are like redundancy as I do, your furnace may also have an on/off switch to turn the power to the furnace on or off.

Yes, it does have a switch but it also requires a walk outside, a screwdriver to open the door and then remembering that your switched it off after you went to bed and now have to get dressed go outside in the dark with your screwdriver and now a flashlight to turn on the switch.

For whatever it is worth to anyone. The Suburban NS 30 furnace has an on off switch that is located on the side of the furnace where the wiring harness plugs in. You don't have to brave the weather etc. to turn it off. Also a remote switch should be able to be rigged that is more easily accessible.

My thermostat is also a generic non programable one I got from Walmart. Solved my short cycling problem.

I recently had a minor incident where I thought the thermostat was "off" but was not. The gas was shut off and we had a cold night causing the furnace fan to run all night and drain my battery. At least that's why I think my battery was dead.
