Gas valve shut off help

I have a 1972 Safari with no manual. On the heater and refridgerator is the gas off if the value stem is parallel, runing the same direction as the line, or perpendicular, 90 degree angle from the line?

Generally, the line on the valve needs to be parallel to the gas line for it to be open.

My 75 TW has gas valves for the heater, water heater and stove (inside the stove). All of them work the way Terry described.

When my gas valves are 90' from the line the valve is off.
