GAS safety question

Here is a safety question on pilot lights etc.

First of all before we use the gas again I will have a working gas detector.

I see a shut off valve for the gas going to the furnace. I don't see one for the stove or the oven.

? If the gas is on but the valve is shut off for the furnace do I need to make sure that the pilot lights are lit for the stove and oven?

I believe most of the newer stoves and furnaces do not have pilots. The oven may have one.? zz

The simple answer is yes.

But I think you will smell the small amount of gas coming out of an open pilot before it becomes dangerous. That being said: there are small inline valves inside the stove to shut off the gas to the pilots. They are not obvious and open and close with a screwdriver. I shut my pilots off. It seemed a lot easier to light the burners by hand than keep lighting the pilots.

I am pretty sure there are valves for the other appliances. It took me a while but I found the shut off for the stove and oven. The valve for the stove is under the stove top (front right) and the oven was harder to find. I was in the cabinet area under the sink.

As far as your question - I would say yes. You would have gas coming out of the pilots.

All 4 shut offs for my gas fixtures are located outside at the belly pan entry locations.

On my '71, there is a shutoff valve under the cooktop, and (depending on what model stove you have) there's one behind the panel, or in our "top of the line international" there's actually a pilot off on the knob.

In addition to the shutoff valves others have mentioned, check the oven control knob on your stove. Mine has a setting one notch down from the OFF position for Pilots Off.

In that position, the gas can be turned on at the tanks without leaking thru the pilot tubes.
