Furnace thermostat question....

My '78 Trade Wind has a thermostat for the furnace, but it only responds to temperature; it doesn't have an ON-OFF switch. Yes, I know there's a switch on the side of the furnace, but mine's in a position where you'd have to tear stuff apart (either the cabinets or your hands, whichever you prefer) to get to it.

My fear here is that even with the lever set all the way down to 40 or so, the heater will come on and run the fan without gas to try to heat the coach while it's in storage if it's cold enough. I'm fixing to install a cheapo Honeywell 'stat with a switch to address my perhaps imaginary problem.

Has anyone else run into this?

The original thermostat on my parents 73 Airstream had a notch at the low temperature end which acted as a switch to turn it off.

I just replaced the original Suburban 'stat with one of these.

Seems to work fine, and the COOL - OFF - HEAT switch lets me turn the heater completely off.

My Argosy is the same. I just remove the cover on the t-stat and wedge a little folded up piece of paper between the contacts. Pretty low tech but has work for years.

God forbid I should come up with such an easy answer!

Just put a on/off toggle switch in line with either one of the thermostat wires. Problem solved.
