Furnace cover
Received in the mail from Frank a furnace cover for the 63, but not sure how this was supposed to bolt up. I gather from marks on the metal frame that I have it layed out, but not sure what the brackets are for, nor how they mount. Also wondering how the chimney like unit bolted up.
I've searched for threads showing an install on this, saw Bowen water heater doors, but nothing on this one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

tomorrow I will take some photos of how mine looks without the cover on, and the back of the cover, you can maybe see from that how you could make it work, although mine is not a refit to a new furnace, we still have the old one in place.

The shroud fits over a vent that projects from the side of the trailer. It drops down onto the vent and there are two screws to secure it that go in from the sides, near the bottom. They go in at a slight angle.
The plate that mine is attached to is a single piece, not the same as the parts in your picture, but the final attachment is the same. If you look at the back of your shroud you should see the two tabs with holes for the screws. I don't have my camera with me, or I would get a couple of close-ups for you. If you still need more info tomorrow evening I will get them to you. Here's a straight-on shot I had already downloaded
Good luck, Rich
P.S. I almost traded my '64 safari for the safari you are working on. It wouldn't have been a good trade for me at the time. I'm glad you ended up with it.

Thank you guys, I appreciate any photos. It will be going over a suburban furnace so hopefully there won't be too much modification but I guess we'll see! The tabs on this one are a bit chewed up but I think I can make it work. Did the original furnace have intake/exhaust horizontally versus verticle like the modern suburbans?

this is what I need to tuck behind it (borrowing the photo). Of course it mounts up and down, not sideways as shown here. Viking does you removable panel have any drip cap over it or anything? Also, we're glad we ended up with it too =) If it didn't have the history it wouldn't have been a good trade for us, we were just to the fun part (all wiring was new, new insulation throughout, new rear floor, new window weatherstrips, repaired door and frame, rebuilt step) but we're not complaining. We're happy how it turned out.

It's vertical. but I think the screws go into the furnace itself, so you may need to modify the attachment to work with your suburban. It shouldn't be very difficult though. Probably just a couple of tabs screwed to the front of the piece in your picture.

Here's the back, both horizontal slots. May have to modify the back some.

By vertical I meant the inlet is below the outlet, rather than side by side. You're right, the back will need some work....

There's no drip cap on the furnace vent. The original vent sticks into the shroud and the shroud keeps the water out by its design. I'll post some pics tonight.

Hi goransons,
Here are a few pics of my furnace cover and the attaching location. If you need any more detailed shots let me know.
Good luck, Rich

Ok that makes a lot more sense. I guess I need to get the plywood in this section then reinstall the furnace, and see how I can align things. I'll have to modify this cover, I just hope there is enough air flow with the venting relocated, but would imagine it should be ok. Thanks again for taking the time to pull that apart and snap photos!

I needed to take it off soon anyway, so I'm glad it was some help.
I'll be stripping the rest of my interior out this weekend, furnace included, so now I'll have one less thing to do saturday morning.
I don't know how similar these safaris are from '63 to '64, but I'm taking lots of pictures as I dismantle mine. If you need pics of anything for your documentation let me know. My trailer is almost bone-stock '64 vintage & I'm sure there is some overlap in these two years.
Good luck, Rich

I know these pictures are of the water heater, and not the furnace, but check out the hinged door modifcation during the refurbishment. Might this have an application for the furnace as well? I like the idea of being able to get to more of the hot water heater and/or furnace from the outside. This work was performed by Vintage Campers in Indiana.

Is the water heater above an atwood? we are needing to buy a new one and want to keep the old cover, just wondered if this is atwood.

Tim I missed the last post this week, the one with the hinge. That is a great idea, nice way to blend the old and new. I think I can do something like this on ours. I hope to do that very same on our water heater when we get to that stage, but will also have to either find or replicate the door/chimney bit. One thing I can't see from the photo is how they hold the door shut.

It looks like a single push/turn knob holds it all closed. Look at the photo with the door closed and the knob is half way down on the far right. You can also just make out the knob in the open door picture, same location, only an inside view of the "male" side.

It looks like a suburban 6 gallon, but I could be wrong. I think this is going to be our plan. I got a bowen unit this week, tried taking it apart today, tank looks decent, but has so much sediment in it I don't think Id ever get it clean, plus gas valve and burner are toast, there is another 140 or so in parts on a 40 year old tank. I too need to confirm brand on this. The reason I was thinking Suburban is that I thought the atwood had the exhaust on the left, not the right.

Hinged water heater cover
I'm 99% sure the picture of the hinged water heater cover utilizing the original Bowen shroud is my 1963 Tradewind. I had Dan Piper of Vintage Campers in Peru, Indiana engineer this for me, and it was correctly described in a previous post. When closed it is secured by a stainless knobbed screw. The water heater is a 6 gal. Suburban. It fit perfectly under the gaucho bed.
I have since polished the trailer and the shroud. Without close inspection you would never notice it is not completely original.

Thanks Mike, well I'm gonna copy you!!! The water heater sits in a closet in ours. Have you found the 6 gallon big enough for your needs? Our 69 has a 10 gallon suburban.

The 6 gal. water heater has been adequate for us. However, I would have installed a 10 gal if it would have fit under the gaucho.
It was about 1" too tall and would have required rebuilding the gaucho.
I'd go with a 10 gal. if you have room.
Also, I intalled the standard Suburban that requires manual lighting of the pilot light. That is the way the original Bowen worked. Basic!!!
If I had it to do over, I would install a self-lighting model.
