Frozen A/C unit

My airconditioner was a sold block of ice in the front of the unit. I let it thaw
out and now it is blowing cold air again. What would cause this?

Is your AC unit also a heat pump?

The AC will freeze for a number of reasons.

The coils need to be cleaned, the water will collect and not run off due to the crud that collects on the fins.

The freon in the AC is low. If you have an Armstrong, or duo-therm penguin, they have service ports that allow for a recharge by a home AC contractor.

If you are running the fan on low, in a high humidity environment will cause freeze up. The slower air movement allows for a higher amount of condensation to collect and it does not drain off fast enough, so it freezes.

I thought that he was talking about the condenser freezing up when he said that is was a solid block of ice in front of the unit. If he meant that it was a block of ice inside the trailer where the evapaorator is then all the reasons you posted are correct.
If the unit is also a heat pump and the ice was on the outside in front where the condenser is then it is most likly the soloniod that switches the unit from inside cooloing to inside heating.
That's why I asked if it was a heat pump also. I don't know if they are made for AS but in commerical use they often freeze up like that on the outside when that soloniod sticks or goes bad.

Let's not forget , a dirty air filter will also cause ice . Have seen it on residential A/C.

Guilty of that one! I have a reusable and I could have sworn I had recently cleaned it but I guess I was wrong. Froze it up a week ago LOL.
